More than half the world's countries are contaminated by landmines and other explosive remnants of war, killing and injuring civilians long after conflicts end. HI is the world's most comprehensive mine action organization, clearing weapons, educating communities, and supporting survivors toward independent lives.
Landmines, cluster munitions, and other explosive remnants of war contaminate more than half the world's countries, lying dormant for years and killing or maiming civilians long after fighting ends. These weapons deepen poverty, instill lasting fear in communities, and act as a barrier to development and recovery.
HI trains and deploys deminer teams to clear conventional and improvised weapons, and educates communities - especially children - on how to spot, avoid, and report hazards. For survivors, HI provides physical therapy, psychosocial support, prosthetics, and help returning to school, work, and community life.
Cleared land can safely return to farming, housing, and daily life, while trained deminers and educated communities reduce future casualties. HI's decades of treaty advocacy - including its Nobel Peace Prize-winning role in banning landmines - continue building lasting protections for civilians worldwide.
