Challenge

In Comalapa, Guatemala, many families lack reliable access to safe drinking water and rely on contaminated taps, rivers, or household pilas where water can carry bacteria and parasites. Some families purchase drinking water in plastic sachets or bottles, creating ongoing costs and waste, while others boil water daily using fuel and time. These challenges contribute to preventable illness, particularly among children, and impact household finances, school attendance, and overall quality of life.

Solution

This project provides families in Comalapa with household water filters that remove bacteria and parasites, providing immediate access to safe drinking water. Families receive training to properly use, clean, and maintain their systems. WATA works alongside local student ambassadors who help conduct installations, support follow-up visits, answer questions, and monitor long-term usage. This community-led approach helps ensure families continue benefiting from clean water long after distribution.

Long-Term Impact

Families gain reliable access to safe drinking water, reducing waterborne illness and dependence on boiling or purchasing water. This lowers household expenses, saves time, and reduces plastic waste throughout the community. Through a growing network of approximately 24 student ambassadors and ongoing follow-up, WATA is building a sustainable community-led clean water program. The long-term goal is to expand access across Comalapa, benefiting thousands of residents through local leadership.
