Thousands of Tanzanian schoolchildren lack clean water, safe toilets, and hygiene facilities, leading to illness, absenteeism, and dropouts especially among girls. This project will build gender-sensitive toilets, provide clean water systems, handwashing stations, and menstrual hygiene facilities in 5 schools. Through hygiene education and WASH clubs, 2,500 children will benefit directly, creating healthier, safer, and more inclusive schools.
In many schools in Tanzania, inadequate access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities continues to affect students' health, dignity, and education outcomes. Children are forced to drink unsafe water, use unhygienic toilets, or in some cases, miss school entirely especially girls during menstruation. This leads to high rates of absenteeism, poor academic performance, and increased vulnerability to preventable diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, and cholera.
This project will provide clean water, gender-sensitive toilets, handwashing stations, and menstrual hygiene facilities in 5 schools. Combined with hygiene education and student-led WASH clubs, it will reduce illness, absenteeism, and dropouts, especially among girls, while promoting lasting hygiene practices and creating healthier, safer, and more inclusive learning environments.
The project will improve student health, reduce absenteeism, and increase school retention, especially for girls. By fostering proper hygiene practices through education and WASH clubs, it will create sustainable, safe, and inclusive school environments. Communities will benefit from lasting behavior change, improved sanitation, and greater awareness of water, hygiene, and menstrual health.
