The ability to ensure we have clean drinking water for the children of GLA is usually the focus of these updates. But today, we wanted to ensure that you knew just how far having clean water actually goes. We need the ability to filter any water delivered by truck in addition to the rain water that we collect. A water truck cost $90 per truck and the diesel we use in order to power the generator which gives us electricity to run our water filtration system is a substantial monthly cost for us as well. This filtered water is what we use to bathe the children, wash dishes, boil to cook meals and more.
In addition to that, did you know that we need clean water for the operation of our oxygen concentrators in the NICU? One of the potential adverse effects of using supplementary oxygen with a continuous flow concentrator is causing dry nasal passages. And that's bad news for preemie babies who are already fighting for their lives. Extreme discomfort from sore and scabby nasal membranes can lead to nose bleeds and the potential for infection. A humidifier bottle with clean water in it, attached to a concentrator moistens the air. The oxygen passes through water before coming out of the concentrator and is then breathed in by the baby via either a mask or nasal cannula. It's a simple process that we'd take for granted in most any other place beside Haiti. But here, if we don't have that clean water, we're not giving our best care to those children whose lives depend on it.
So there you have it. The ways in which clean water enrich, enable and give hope to the children of GLA are endless. You're continued help in this endeavor reaches further than you know and touches the lives of each child here at God's Littlest Angels. We couldn't do any of this without you. THANK YOU!
