Christmas Giving Action 2025 Impact Report (Japan)

By Alecia Thomson | Director of Program Development and Monitoring

The Christmas Giving Action is a nationwide initiative in Japan that delivers food and gift packages alongside personal visits to individuals experiencing isolation, poverty, or disaster-related hardship. More than material aid, the project fosters human connection and reminds recipients that they are not alone.

This year, the Christmas Giving Action continued to reach individuals and families across Japan who are experiencing isolation, economic hardship, or the long-term effects of disasters. Through the delivery of Christmas gift packages accompanied by personal visits and conversations, the project aims not only to meet practical needs, but to restore human connection and remind people that they are not alone.

Impact in December 2025

  • 2,591 individuals reached
  • 94 volunteers mobilized

  • Partner organizations across communities (including churches)

  • 11 prefectures across Japan

  • Over 2,000 gift packages distributed

Each gift represented more than material support—it was an opportunity for connection, conversation, and care.

Why This Project Matters

In Japan, social isolation and loneliness are growing challenges, particularly among the elderly, single-parent households, and those affected by disasters. Rising living costs have made it increasingly difficult for many to celebrate holidays such as Christmas.

The Christmas Giving Action was created to address not only physical needs, but also emotional and social isolation. By combining gift-giving with personal interaction, the project helps build trust, strengthen community ties, and create spaces where people feel seen and valued.

What We Did

With the support of volunteers and partner organizations, we:

  • Prepared and distributed Christmas gift packages including food, daily necessities, and messages of encouragement

  • Delivered gifts through community networks, churches, and local partners

  • Conducted home visits and community outreach, especially for individuals unable to leave their homes

  • Organized seasonal gatherings and events to create opportunities for connection

Regional Highlights

Ishikawa Prefecture (Earthquake-Affected Areas)

In communities impacted by the Noto Peninsula earthquake, volunteers and church partners prepared and distributed gift packages to residents in temporary housing. Regular visits created opportunities for conversation and ongoing support, particularly among elderly residents.

Miyagi Prefecture

At a monthly community meal program in Sendai, a special Christmas event was held where participants received gifts and shared time together. Additional support was provided through food bank partnerships.

Fukushima Prefecture

Through our Blessin Room (community space) in Minamisoma, gifts were distributed alongside meal programs that offer both practical support and emotional care. In Namie, local leaders conducted home visits to individuals who are unable to go out.

Osaka and Yamaguchi

Local partners and volunteers delivered gifts to vulnerable families and children, extending the reach of the project to additional regions.

Stories of Connection

One volunteer shared her desire to support a friend facing personal and financial difficulties. Through the Christmas Giving Action, she delivered a gift with a heartfelt message, hoping to encourage her. This act became a bridge—opening the door to reconnecting and inviting her friend into a community space.

Moments like these reflect the true impact of the project: not only meeting needs, but creating pathways for relationships, support, and belonging.

 Voices from the Community

“I never thought I would look forward to Christmas at my age.”
— Participant, Sendai
“When I saw the rice, I couldn’t stop crying. It helped me so much.”
— Resident, Ishikawa
“I felt that someone cared about me.”
— Parent of a child with disabilities, Minamisoma

Growing Impact Over Time

Since its launch, the Christmas Giving Action has continued to expand:

  • 2021: 300 packages

  • 2022: 640 packages

  • 2023: 1,210 packages

  • 2024: 922 packages

  • 2025: Over 2,000 packages (largest scale to date)

Over five years, the project has reached communities across Japan, strengthening networks of care and encouraging citizen-led action.

Looking Ahead

Beyond the holiday season, the relationships formed through this project continue. Many recipients stay connected with local communities, and volunteers remain engaged in ongoing support efforts. These connections also strengthen disaster response networks, enabling faster and more coordinated support when emergencies occur.

Thank You

This work would not be possible without the generosity of donors, volunteers, and partner organizations. Your support makes it possible to deliver not only essential goods, but also dignity, connection, and hope.

Together, we are building communities where no one is forgotten.
