Choma online magazine provides digital access to health and sexual reproductive health information and education to adolescent girls and young women as well as adolescent boys and young men in South Africa. High teen pregnancy rates and high HIV infections in young girls threaten their health and survival. Choma also provides online counselling through ASK Choma to help young girls make informed sexual health decisions. Choma is available on all social media platforms.
Young people especially adolescent girls and young women in South Africa face significant barriers to accessing accurate, relatable information about their sexual and reproductive health. This contributes to persistently high rates of HIV infection, teen pregnancy, gender-based violence, and mental health challenges. Many youth also experience limited digital access, social stigma, and a lack of safe spaces to learn, ask questions, or seek support without judgment.
Choma Magazine addresses these challenges through a multi-platform, youth-focused approach. It provides accessible, judgment-free digital content on HIV prevention, healthy relationships, mental health, and gender issues, along with a real-time "Ask Choma" advice service. To reach those with limited internet access, Choma has established solar powered safe spaces where young women can go online, access content, and receive psychosocial support. Choma also runs in-person health talks at schools.
Choma's work is helping to build an informed, empowered generation of young South Africans who are better equipped to make healthy life choices. These approaches aim to reduce rates of HIV infection, teen pregnancy, and gender-based violence. Encourage open conversations around taboo topics like consent, identity, and sexual health. Strengthen support networks for young people, especially girls, through both digital and in-person communities.
