How kids can stay safe

By JiaQi Qian | Supervisor of Partnership Development

Every day, people suffer accidental injuries. Research findings indicate that over 60,000 children in China die from accidental injuries annually, with 61.4% of these incidents occurring in rural areas.

A significant number of children residing in rural areas have parents who are employed outside the home and are absent from their care for extended periods. In the absence of sufficient care and companionship from their families, it is imperative that we address how children can stay away from potential dangers and better protect themselves in their daily lives.

Teaching children how to protect themselves

In October, the Protecting Kids Camp: Gaining Self-Rescue Skills initiative continued to conduct safety education classes, including traffic safety classes, fire safety classes, drowning prevention classes, and earthquake disaster mitigation classes. A total of 8,720 children received safety knowledge and self-rescue skills training from the Protecting Kids Camp: Gaining Self-Rescue Skills programme during the month.

After one of the fire safety classes, a student from a rural area shared, ‘There are many left-behind children in the village where I live, and when I go back to my hometown on weekends, I see many of my buddies get together and roast sweet potatoes under the eaves of the old houses, which was fun at the time, but through the teacher's explanations in the class, I learnt that it's very dangerous for children to play with fire on their own without adult supervision. But through the teacher's explanation in this lesson, I learnt that it is dangerous for children to play with fire on their own without adult supervision, and I must go back to discourage them.’ XiaoCheng also shared, ‘My dad's study computer desk, a plug plug full of plugs, the winter heater is also connected to it, it is very easy to cause the line heat short circuit, triggering a fire, I go back to my dad must talk to him about this, so that he can not be plugged in so many plugs!’

Very often, people will find that it is very difficult to popularise safety knowledge for adults and then let them teach their own children, because it is already very difficult to change the thinking and habits of adults. But children are different, and effective safety education is only effective if children know what is at risk and learn to protect themselves from an early age.

To make the commitment to improve children's ability to perceive risks and improve self-rescue skills generally accepted, it will take a longer period of time, and more people need to support public welfare projects like Protecting kids Camp:gaining self-rescue skill
