We are taking active part in “Daan Utsav 100 Heroes” resource mobilization campaign of GiveIndia Fundraisers which started on 2nd October 2020 and will close on 20th November (IST). GiveIndia is also offering matching grants though not as attractive as GlobalGiving’s matching grants. BREAD has received about $ 4,000 in the first week and will receive 20% matching grant. BREAD thanks its donors for the support it has received. Much as it would like to, it is unable to participate in GlobalGivings resource mobilization campaigns due to the uncertainity about receiving donations. It is missing out on so many GlobalGiving donors who used to support through GlobalGiving and is mentioning the link because it would like them to support with their donations. The link is:

BREAD has yet to receive your donations and GlobalGiving Foundation’s matching grants of over $6,000 as Govt. of India has not given permission. BREAD has dug deep to fulfill all its commitments to its donors.

BREAD Society has set up 65 new libraries in the last three months. It has also distributed 40 new books to 1,329 libraries established till 31st March 2020. In addition, it has published 5,000 copies of a Handbook for the guidance of Headmasters and library teachers to operate the libraries adopting the system developed by it. It has distributed three copies each of this book to the 1,394 library schools along with 40 books, one for headmaster, one for library teacher and the other for the library. Sometimes when headmasters or library teachers get transferred their successors are not aware of the system to operate BREAD libraries through Voluntary Student Librarians. This Handbook in vernacular will be on hand to the new headmasters and library teachers to understand and follow the guidelines.

Ever since the decision was taken by Governing Body of BREAD Society to set up libraries in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) last year, BREAD has set up 91 libraries in KGBVs which are residential girls schools for orphans, dropouts, single parent and poor girls.

BREAD thanks the recurring anonymous donor for continuing his monthly donation of $ 25 for 28 months without a break. BREAD Society has abstained from participating in GlobalGiving campaigns for raising funds as it is not certain as to when and whether the funds will be transferred to it.

BREAD has received Rs. 3.88 lakh donations for Covid-19 and disbursed dry rations to daily wage workers partly at Kakinada and partly at Pune by identifying the beneficiaries.

BREAD could establish only 9 more new libraries in the financial year 2019-20 due to lockdown. In all 170 new libraries have been set up in the financial year 2019-20. This is the maximum number of libraries established in a year ever since this project was taken up in 2009-10, eleven years ago.

BREAD has also prepared material for 12 more new libraries in the current financial year 2020-21 but some of the books sets and bookcases have not reached the schools due to lockdown. In any case none of the 21 new libraries of the last three months could be inaugurated or made functional.

I wish to thank a couple of anonymous donors, one of them a monthly contributor for their continued support in spite of the fact that it is not known when funds will be transferred from GlobalGiving to us. We hope that the significant amount of donations due to us will be transferred soon. We have not been doing any resource mobilization through GlobalGiving ever since the problem of transfer cropped up.

Governing Body of BREAD Society had its 103rd Meeting at Hyderabad on 2nd January 2020. It has taken the following decisions.

1. To increase the donation to setup a new library from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 45,000 by increasing the Corpus for replenishing books from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 20,000 as interest rates have come down drastically from around 8% to about 6%,

2. To setup libraries in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs). Govt. of India has been establishing residential girls’ schools in backward Mandals where women’s literacy is lowest. Also, girls in KGBVs are either dropouts, single parent children, orphans or poor and economically more backward than regular govt. school students. And, being confined to hostels, not having any access to public libraries they read more books as compared to boys.

3. To setup libraries in Upper Primary schools. TATA Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Hyderabad after a field study of BREAD libraries had recommended that we should setup libraries in Primary schools. Selecting primary schools to setup libraries in an objective manner is not feasible. So, we have opted for UP schools, which also have primary classes.

4. To setup libraries in govt. girls’ high schools fulfilling NMMS norm.

5. To consider govt. schools with outstanding performance in NMMS test.

We have established 19 more new libraries adding up to 161 libraries setup during April 2019 to date as on 20th February 2020. Thus, we have created access of books to over 72,000 underprivileged students during this year. We have exceeded the target to set up new libraries by nearly 20%.

We have also felicitated 378 headmasters and teachers responsible for the outstanding performance of students in National level Test and public examinations.

I wish to thank the donors for supporting us through the Bonus Day Campaign of July 2019 and the Little by Little Campaign of August 2019 for their support. We have not received the funds from Global Giving due to some difficulty with govt. of India but we hope the problem will be resolved as Global Giving is making every effort.

We have established 72 more new libraries, including 8 with anticipated donations of BONUS DAY, by the end of September 2019. This is in addition to the 70 libraries set up till end of July 2019. Thus, we have created access of books to over 63,000 underprivileged students during April-Sep. 2019. We have, thus, exceeded the target to set up 135 libraries during the year April 2019-March 2020 within the first six months itself.

We have also felicitated 351 headmasters and teachers responsible for students getting National Means cum Merit Scholarships during this period.

Dear Donors,

I wish to thank tyou all for supporting us through the Bonus Day Campaign of July 2019 and the Little by Little Campaign of August 2019. We have not received the funds from GlobalGiving due to some difficulty with govt. of India. We do not know when these funds will be released. Yet, we are continuing to do what we have promised to do,establishing new libraries with Bonus Day contributions and Little by Little campaign of August. .

We have established 70 new libraries by the end of July creating access of books to over 31,000 more underprivileged students. This was possible due to donations received in last week of March.

We have dispatched a set of 40 new books to 1,159 existing BREAD libraries set up till March 2019. This was also completed by end of July 2019. Your donations received through “Little by Little” campaign of April 2019 have helped us to replenish 660 of these libraries. We have taken into account the interest earned on Corpus of Rs. 88,000 also. However, we have reverted the corpus of Rs. 88,000 and along with balance Rs. 112,000 available from donations received through Global Giving we are in the process of establishing 8 new libraries to fulfill our obligations. These 8 new libraries will be set up during September 2019.

Governing Body of BREAD Society has decided to set up 10 to 15 libraries in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalays (KGBVs) on a pilot basis. KGBVs are residential high schools for girls from underprivileged sections of society established in backward Mandals with low rate of literacy among women. We have already established one library at KGBV, Vangara. Girls are excited and we can see the brightness in their eyes. Their joy in reading the books is a wonderful sight. We are establishing 10 libraries in KGBVs by end of September 2019.

Mr. Chinaveerabhadrudu, IAS, State Project Director, Sarva Siksha Abhiyaan  (SSA), Andhra Pradesh has visited our facility at Kakinada in August and observed that the Organization has been rendering exemplary and selfless service in establishing libraries to promote reading habit among children. He has further directed all officers of Education Department to make use of BREAD libraries, if necessary by conducting competitions.
