Every morning, Anya wakes up at 8 o’clock to do morning exercises. 15 minutes of high-activity exercise is the key to being in a good mood for the rest of the day.
“I skip, then I do exercises for my shoulders and stomach muscles, then squats. My top achievement is standing into a backbend.” Anya tells us.
This happy eighth-grade student is almost unrecognisable when you think back to the shy little girl in glasses that was teased in primary school and called a pirate. Anya has a heart condition and in primary school she used to get tired easily. She couldn’t keep up with her classmates in physical education classes and was shy about making friends.
“Anya had some difficulties with coordination and had slower reactions. She struggled to catch the ball during pioneer ball and was a little afraid of it. We attended seminars on physical education led by Perspektiva where we were told to increase the difficulty gradually. For example, I showed her how to place her hands when serving. At first, Anya couldn’t get the ball to the net, but after a year of training, she started serving right to the end line! I saw her smile, the joy on her face from playing with her team-mates, who she started to make friends with,” Anya’s PE teacher Vladimir tells us.
Now, Anya is a member of the volleyball club and regularly attends training sessions. In her free time, she plays with a ball or badminton with her little sister. Inthe winter, shegoesskiing. Her interest in sports was piqued after a workshop led by Perspektiva. She met Tatyana, a coordinator in Perspektiva’s sports department and a medallist at the Russian and European Paralympic Powerlifting Championships and was inspired. “Tatyana may not be very tall, but she’s so strong! She can lift weights two times her height! She’s positive and loves life”, Anya recalls.
Tatyana showed Anya some exercises with weights and taught her what girls need to do to stay in shape and build good muscle tone. She also showed her how to do squats and lunges with weights to exercise the thigh and buttock muscles.
“My daughter was a new person after meeting a Paralympic athlete! It used to be really hard to get her to do exercise. She would say her muscles were asleep and she didn’t want to exercise. Now she’s the one getting up earlier than everyone else to do her morning exercises. She’s a great role model for her younger sister!”, Anya’s dad Alexey tells us.
