Over the last few months, Stop the Silence has been actively involved in a number of activities, and your support has provided a key to our ability to move forward on the following fronts:
• We took part in DC, Boys to Men celebration, April 3, in Washington DC, hosted by Big Sis and Compnay, and provided a booth with information to attendees; • Over the past year, Queendom TEA (http://queendomtea.ning.com/) has been working with the current group of 25 girls in the Baltimore area. Queendom TEA conducted a Mother/Daughter tea on Sat., May 9, where mentors presented life information to the girls and their mothers, aunts, grandmothers, or other women important in their lives. The graduation for the current group of teen girls is this coming weekend, May 29 -- we're very excited about it! Queendom TEA Director, LaQuisha Hall, will be traveling to Europe this summer to conduct a group in Switzerland. Some teens taking part in Queendom TEA have noted that likely would have taken their own lives without the program. We are working hard to expand the program, and we are developing a program for boys; • We have presented information to hundreds of community members in and around the Prince George's Co., Maryland area through school and community health fairs (Powell Elementary and MacFarland Middle Schools, Riverdale Multicultural Center), and our current intern is developing a plan for widely disseminating in Capital Heights, MD, an underserved area in Prince George's Co., and he will be working hard through the summer to put that plan into action; • We met with the Director, Department of Social Services, Prince George’s, to identify ways to collaborate through training and outreach, and we are following up with plans that arise from those discussions; • Stop the Silence staff has continued providing media oureach in the DC Metropolitan area and beyond, through, for examples, a ClearChannel Radio interview in April (most of program was devoted to Stop the Silence and broadcast on 6-8 stations in Metro area and beyond) and an interview with Women’s Radio/Women’s Calendar in April, broadcast globally; • We conducted the Freeze to Stop the Silence in five cities, a grass roots event meant to raise awareness about child sexual abuse. Jeff Haldorson provides a wonderful account of his involvement in the Freeze in NYC on You Tube (see You Tube - Man with a sign: http://www.youtube.com/user/skeletonsdontsleep2#p/a/u/0/IrjQM9Dh39U, and www.freezetostopthesilence.com).
