Stop child sexual abuse through global education

The end of the second quarter of 2021 at Stop the Silence® brought the continuation of programmig, plans, and setup - internationally and for schools in the U.S. As I noted in the first 2021 quarterly report, Stop the Silence® changed its status and became a Department of the Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma (IVAT) on January 1, 2021. We continue with all the great programming that we have conducted for 20 years, but, now, we have a larger professional base, an expanded network, and... more help! This change will help sustain the work of Stop the Silence® for years to come, focused on child sexual abuse (CSA) and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) prevention, healing, and mitigation through advocacy, education, training, and policy development and reform.

Primary Activities this Past Quarter

1. Stop the Silence® - Ongoing applications and programming

Our focus on international and U.S. programming this past quarter has included:

• As we wait to hear about whether our application for a grant for $5 million to the U.S. government to support for our model programming in Peru, South Africa, and Indonesia, we continue to submit for support from various foundations to conduct online training with school teachers and day care workers in the U.S., with a primary focus on those in underserved communities. 
• All our social media outreach on FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. for survivors and others
• Educational/training speaking engagements, e.g., I (Pamela Pine) will be providing a webinar on CSA and ACEs through IVAT on August 3 (stay tuned for the link), Other engagements are in the works. 
• Our nanny (and for others, too) training in partnership with The Nanny League - check it out here.
• We finalized and submitted an article for publication in May to the International Academic Conference on Humanities and Social Sciences (IACHSS) on our model programming and expect it to be published soon - I will send publication information once it is available.

2. Expanding our online education 

Stop the Silence® continues to work on the setup for the development of Masters, Post-Graduate Diploma, and Post-Graduate Certificate Level Programmes in Child Trauma and Protection, Level 7. We are currently recruiting for experts to develop video presentations that will be used as a part of the curriculum. We expect to go live with the first level (Certificate) of the program marketed primarily to a U.S. audience by the end of 2021; thereafter, once the launch of that level has been tried and any "bugs" addressed, the other levels of the program will be made available, and the program will be marketed to the world. The program is accredited by the University of Applied Research and Development (UARD) in the UK (their performance in the latest QS World University Rankings is ranked first in the world for development studies), but also by Texas A&M, which has a formal relationship with UARD. The program will be priced affordably for both upper and lower income countries. 

3. The upcoming IVAT Summit. 

I am a member of the Planning Committee for the upcoming 26th Annual San Diego International Summit. The Summit is a unique forum for professionals across all disciplines and philosophies to gather (this year, both in-person or virtually) for in-depth exchange of current information on all facets of violence, abuse and trauma prevention, intervention, and research. We are one of the very few events that include researchers, practitioners, advocates, survivors, and front-line workers from all disciplines to share information, discuss controversial issues, and engage in difficult dialogues. Evident in our uniquely comprehensive programming, the Summit focuses on linking research, practice, policy and advocacy to provide violence-free living for all. Opportunities for networking, continuing education, specialty certifications, and more make this an event you don't want to miss. Hello, all. Here we are already at the end of the first quarter of 2021! Even with all the troubles of the past year, time, of course, marches on. I hope you are all taking care of yourselves and your loved ones and others. As I noted in the last report, but it's worth repeating... While we hopefully are beginning to move out of the extreme isolation that the world has experienced, it has been a really tough time for many, and Survivors (as well as all others) may feel the impact of being alone, coping alone, figuring out alone. And children are still at continued risk due to the stress in families and the closure of schools and other normal activities. We at Stop the Silence® - A Department of the Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma hope that we make lives that much easier by providing information, training, and support.

Below I include more information on what the our Departmental status means and an update on our primary other news... 

Primary Activities this Past Quarter

1. Stop the Silence® - A Department of the Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma

Stop the Silence® has been collaborating with IVAT for about 15 years. The partnership has been a strong one, We have presented at IVAT Summits in Hawaii and San Diego for over a decade; I have been a member of advisory committees and associated Boards (e.g., the National Partnership to End Interpersonal Violence); we have partnered on grants and programming; we have served on committees together, etc., etc., etc. So, it is with confidence and excitement that we move forward as one, with all the Stop the Silence® programming being performed as a part of Stop the Silence® - A Department of IVAT (see our great new logo above!)

Now, as a part of IVAT, our programming remains the same, with a broader professional base, a wider reach, and more program assistance. 

This past quarter, we have continued:

• Our international model prevention, treatment and mitigation programming. This month (March), through our IVAT Department, we were able to submit a grant for $5 million to the U.S. government for (hopefully) support for our model programming in Peru, South Africa, and Indonesia. We will likely hear about interest in funding the programming some time in the Spring, at which point, likely more information would be needed from us. We also have engage another person to be working to research and write additional grants for programming focused in the U.S. and abroad. 
• All the social media outreach on FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. for survivors and others
• Our educational/training speaking engagements. I (Pamela Pine) was an invited speaker at the International e-conference on Trauma, Abuse and Neglect: The Living Nightmares with the Institute of Clinical Psychology of the University of Management and Technology in Lahore, Pakistan, March 2021. I will be speaking / training on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at 9am Pacific time under the National Partnership to End Interpersonal Violence (NPEIV) on Relevance to Other Locations-Stop the Silence on CSA/ ACEs. And, on April 29, I will present during IVAT's 18th Annual HI International Virtual Summit 
• Our distribution of information, research, and materials (we hope to finalize an article for publication on our model this Spring), and other materials also are in the works. Please see under No. 2 below for other associated training.

Title: TIPS for Tuning In– Trauma Informed Practice Skills

Date and Time: Tuesday, April 13, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM PDT

Presenter: Jennifer Jorgenson, LICSW

Description: The training program builds on evidence-informed behavioral parenting programs such as Helping the Non-Compliant Child and PCIT while including relationship building skills similar to those in Child and Adult Relationship Enhancement. Research findings demonstrated improvements in a number of dimensions that have been correlated with well-being for children including parenting self-efficacy, and child behavior outcomes. This focused session will provide participants with hands-on skill building TIPS around increasing positive attachment and enhancing relationships with children with trauma histories. TIPS aims to provide skills to help you TUNE IN, enhance resilience, and minimize behaviors.

Additional Resources: The resources available online are vast and can be overwhelming. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center and the Resource Sharing Project are national leaders in providing support and resources to advocates and community-based responders. The leaders of the “me too” movement have published a toolkit for survivors with ideas for self-care. Perhaps the most important thing we can do during this time is to make special efforts to ensure we are reaching out and checking-in with survivors we know and work with, in addition to our colleagues who are trying to provide support and interventions for victims and survivors.
