Challenges faced to start project due to funding!

By Ashfaq Malik | Chief Executive

Executive Summary

Sanash Welfare Foundation, dedicated to child protection and safeguarding, is facing significant challenges in achieving its funding targets due to the recent social media ban imposed by the Government of Pakistan. This ban has restricted our primary channels for crowdfunding, drastically affecting our ability to secure sustainable funding. This report outlines the complications arising from this ban, analyzes its impact, and proposes potential solutions and strategies to overcome these challenges.

Introduction

Sanash Welfare Foundation is committed to protecting and safeguarding children from abuse, exploitation, and neglect. Our initiatives rely heavily on crowdfunding campaigns, primarily conducted through social media platforms. However, the government's recent ban on these platforms has disrupted our funding mechanisms, presenting substantial obstacles to achieving our financial goals.

Complications Due to Social Media Ban

1. Reduced Outreach and Visibility

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are crucial for reaching a broad audience quickly and effectively. The ban has significantly reduced our outreach and visibility, impeding our ability to:

  • Raise Awareness: Informing the public about child protection issues and our initiatives.
  • Attract Donors: Engaging potential donors who primarily use social media for philanthropic activities.
  • Build Community: Creating and maintaining a supportive community around our cause.

2. Limited Donor Engagement

Engaging with donors and maintaining their interest through regular updates and interactions on social media has become challenging. The ban has affected:

  • Communication: Directly communicating with potential and existing donors.
  • Trust Building: Providing real-time updates and success stories that build trust and credibility.
  • Campaign Momentum: Maintaining the momentum of ongoing campaigns without the regular engagement that social media provides.

3. Dependence on Alternative Platforms

Shifting to alternative platforms poses several issues:

  • Reach and Familiarity: Alternative platforms may not have the same user base or reach, limiting our audience.
  • Technical Barriers: Not all donors are comfortable or familiar with new platforms, leading to reduced participation.
  • Adaptation Time: The time required to adapt to new platforms and strategies delays campaign progress.

Impact Analysis Financial Impact

The social media ban has led to a significant shortfall in expected donations. Our analysis indicates a 60% drop in crowdfunding contributions since the ban's implementation. This shortfall directly impacts our ability to:

  • Fund Ongoing Projects: Existing child protection and safeguarding projects face budget cuts.
  • Initiate New Programs: Launching new initiatives has been postponed due to insufficient funds.
  • Sustain Operations: Operational costs, including staff salaries and administrative expenses, are at risk.

Operational Impact

  • Campaign Planning: Revising our campaign strategies to fit alternative platforms has consumed valuable time and resources.
  • Volunteer Mobilization: Difficulty in mobilizing volunteers who primarily engage through social media.
  • Public Relations: Challenges in maintaining a positive public image without the widespread reach of social media.

Proposed Solutions and Strategies1. Leverage Email Campaigns

  • Email Marketing: Develop comprehensive email marketing campaigns to reach out to our supporters.
  • Segmentation: Segment our email list to target specific groups with tailored messages, increasing engagement and donations.

2. Utilize Messaging Apps and SMS

  • WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal: Use these messaging apps for direct communication and updates.
  • SMS Campaigns: Send short, impactful messages via SMS to reach a broader audience.

3. Collaborate with Influencers and Local Media

  • Influencer Partnerships: Engage local influencers to raise awareness and direct traffic to our crowdfunding site.
  • Media Coverage: Utilize local newspapers, radio, and TV stations to cover our campaigns and initiatives.

4. Develop a Strong Website Presence

  • SEO and Content Marketing: Optimize our website for search engines and create engaging content to attract organic traffic.
  • Donation Options: Ensure a seamless donation process on our website, including various payment methods.

5. Engage with Community Organizations

  • Partnerships: Form alliances with local community organizations, schools, and religious institutions to spread our message and garner support.
  • Events and Workshops: Host events and workshops to directly engage with the community and solicit donations.

6. Explore Alternative Crowdfunding Platforms

  • Local Platforms: Utilize local crowdfunding platforms unaffected by the social media ban.
  • International Platforms: Leverage international platforms with broader outreach mechanisms.

7. Advocacy for Policy Change

  • Engage Policymakers: Work with NGOs and advocacy groups to engage policymakers about the ban's negative impact on humanitarian work.
  • Public Campaigns: Run campaigns to inform the public and build pressure for lifting the ban.

8. Build Offline Networks

  • Community Building: Focus on building strong offline networks through regular community engagement and events.
  • Volunteer Mobilization: Mobilize volunteers to spread the word and collect donations offline.

9. Diversify Funding Sources

  • Grants and Partnerships: Seek grants from international organizations and build partnerships with businesses and philanthropic entities.
  • Regular Donor Programs: Establish programs for regular donors who commit to monthly or yearly contributions.

Conclusion

The social media ban imposed by the Government of Pakistan has significantly hindered Sanash Welfare Foundation's ability to achieve its funding targets for child protection and safeguarding initiatives. However, by implementing a multifaceted approach that includes leveraging alternative communication channels, engaging with local and international partners, and advocating for policy changes, we can overcome these challenges and continue our mission to protect and safeguard children.
