Due to the COVID-19 pandamic and subsequent lockdown, our project encouraging children in learning participating in creating clean environment were until now put on suspension.
Since March 2020 the government of Uganda suspended all public gathering including closure of all schools as a way of combating the corona virus pandamic. This has affected our project which works mainly with schools and community kids. However, we plan to resume with the project in due time when the government eases restriction on contacts which would allow us to continue with the project.
During the lockdown period however, we have decided to shift focus abit and contribute to the fight against the corona virus. We have been reproducing information from our ministry of health and the world health organization and translating these information in local languages to help the community understand how to keep safe and avoid infection. We have also been distributing hand sanitation equipment like handwash containers and soap to public food markets which are allowed to operate.
To date, preparation for major events in this project has continued to unfold, but unfortunately the funds required to start real implememntaion in tangible sense, has not been met yet. Child Equal Opportunity Uganda is using this moment to try and polished even already planned activities to address the dynamic environmental challenges, by engaging children and making them understamd the that future of this world relies on how well or poorly we protect the environment.
Fundraising is continuing and when it get sufficient for first few activities, we will provide updates further updates on implementation and subsequent impacts. To highlight on few issues, we plan to create a situation where children do not only demand for envrionmental protection to secure their futures, but also participate tangibly through compound tree planting, practicing proper waste disposal and creating awareness about the need to protect the environment.
With this project, not a lot was done yet as resources requirement have not been met, neither has the funds been disbursed. How CEOU has been planning and making arrangment for real work to start. We have signed a commitment agreement with three schools namely, Gulu Public P7 school, Awach P7 schools and Paicho P7 schools. In these schools, 100 children from each schoool will be trained in tree planting and these children will be given 30 tree seedlings to plant in their homesteads. The entire school population of these three schools will be trained on how environmental protection relates to disaster. These children will be ambassadors who will speak to their communities about the urgent need to use all means available to save the environment from degradation.
Tree planting work is expected to start in March 2020.
