Greetings to you from HEARDS - India!

HEARDS with the primary aim to introduce innovative teaching and learning strategies at the elementary level for underprivileged children from the slums who have never been exposed to any formal system of education or whose education has had to take a backseat due to migration to the city. The goals of HEARDS include reintegration of the working children populace through educational, economic, social and their spiritual development and the building up youth movements towards self-reliance. We make the underprivileged section of children aware of their rights and pave their way for socio-economic empowerment through education.

ACTIVITIES HELD

Educational Coaching Classes

We have been periodically mainstreaming our children to Government schools. All these children have no background of education, so they find it difficult to sit in our rehabilitation centers for long hours during the initial stages. In the rehabilitation centre, we make it possible for the teachers to give individual attention to our children. So we started easy based learning methodologies in our centre. For this, we have appointed qualified teachers and there responsibility is to take both non-formal and formal education. We have observed that the children who get involved in the classes are very comfortable as most of their queries have been taken care. The children who were unable to cope with the regular studying in the centre, efforts were made by our teachers to help ease the pressure through special coaching classes. These inculcate habit for interest in learning education but also sitting for long hours in one place.

Feed back from the Teachers:

Children are very enthusiastic in learning the non-formal education, computer and also the formal education courses.
Children have given awareness camps regarding the importance of education.
Providing training materials were made them to attend the course regularly
Progress on Children’s education and their regular attendance has improved in a periodical manner.

Evaluation of the children:

It was felt that children need to be exposed to some kind of evaluation to know what they had learnt from the past months. The teachers proposed to conduct an examination for the children. As per the suggestion from the teachers, children will be appeared for the examination by end of April, 2016. All the children who are going to appearthrough the examinationand who are going to get good marks will be going to be mainstreamed in the Government schools in the coming months. The teachers are indeed happy and confident that the majority of children will get good marks in the forth coming examination.

Report on rehabilitation of child labourers

Dear Esteemed Supporters,

Greetings to you from Health Education Adoption Rehabilitation Development Society (HEARDS)!

We are extremely thankful for your continuous support towards the rehabilitation of child laborers and with your continuous support we were able to bring a tremedous change in the community. The project continues to be the only source of quality education for the children of this region. Over the past year, we have seen children from far off communities enrolling in the classes to access a better education. The children’s learning has improved. The older children have grown in confidence and can now speak more fluently. At a recent Annual Day event, even the youngest children recited poems and rhymes with ease. They proudly recited English, Telugu and Hindi rhymes taught to them by our teachers. Another achievement in this past year has been the setting up of a Parents’ Committee. The parent representatives on this community are being encouraged to play a more active role in their children’s education. They help advocate with the community of issues of importance such as attendance, garbage disposal and health. The rehabilitation centre education has created awareness amongst students due to which they are attending the classes timely.

WRITING AND READING PROMOTION ACTIVITIES

Writing and reading promotion activities were given more emphasis this year in the rehabilitation center. The objective of this program was to take children out of the text book context and familiarize them with the language. This includes writing copywriting books, writing home work, correct pronunciation, simple grammar, songs and poetry. Children were encouraged to come forward and talk to their class and read aloud. The children came regularly as they found the class interesting and beneficial to them. Apart from these activities children were also started to read library books in the centre.

MID–DAY MEAL

People living in slum communities find it difficult to make both the ends meet with their meager income. The large family size makes it difficult to feed all the children and thus children do not receive required amount of nutrition. From the inception of the Project we are providing good nutritious food as mid-day meals for all the children in all the working days. We were providing eggs to the children once in a month. Every child is given specific amount of nutrition. This ensures that the children will get at least one square meal a day. As a result they have good health status and they are able to concentrate better on their studies.

THE PROCESS OF JOIN THE CHILDREN TO FORMAL SCHOOL

As the school academic year would start from June, the process of rejoin them to formal Government Schools will begin. During the month of June the age wise and the class in which they had dropped out; the children would admit to government schools near by the centre. The essential books, bags and uniform would be provided to all the children. During the current year we are planning to mainstream around 20 children to formal schools.

CONCLUSION

The Child labour rehabilitation program has been successfully implemented every year and approximately 30-35 children would have been mainstreamed in each year and the overall the program has effective in creating awareness among the public about social evil of Child laboring and its consequences on the society. But the program needs long term support to continue our efforts to make child labour free society. The communities have been giving moral support to us to make this program more effective and useful.

Mainstreamed Children from Government School

Dear Respected Donors,

Greetings to you from HEARDS!

The project on child labor rehabilitation program by HEARDS in partnership with donors like you has impacted positively on the lives of children.Today, with this project, it is now a little easier to rehabilitate the child from the clutches of employer, the frequent attacks on working children is reducing. During our outreach workers survey at the initial stages we found out 124 children as child laborers. After sanctioning the project our Project Coordinator, Teachers and Animators has conducted a re-survey and were able to locate 68 children. Among them we were successfully able to convince 38 children and brought them back to our rehabilitation center. The following are the impact we were able to achieve through this project:

IMPACT ON CHILDREN

All the 38 working children are relieved from bondedness and continue their education, enjoying their childhood, rights, along with family care.
All the 38 children are getting education in a joyful mode.
Now the child dropout rate and the rate of child labor has minimized at maximum level.
The habits of Truancy, Vagrancy among children are reduced and sustaining their moral habits among children by telling moral stories, moral songs and all religious integrated prayers.
This is creating a regular school going habit in our children.
The major impact of the programme is that these child laborers who are socially and economically poor were started to follow systematic combined study, day-to-day review of the lessons learned in the center and has increased interest in their studies.
In the Activity-based Learning, there are significant departures from and improvements on the materials we developed. The children learn the entire curriculum very easily. Besides this the innovation we made was through computers were the children gets easily attracted. The usage of computers towards this Activity-based learning has created greater impact on the children.
Children are molded by their interest on natural pious and integration by celebrating Independence Day, Children’s Day, Teachers Day and Republic Day.

This programme has given a good impact on our children as they become healthier and which will reflect in their studies.
During this year we mainstreamed 18 children into the regular Government schools.

With your valuable contribution we were able to run this project successfully and its giving greater impact when the days goes on. We expect to phase out the child laborers in a couple of years. We expect the same cooperation and consideration from you in the future.
