During this period of global pandemic, for children and young people with cancer, continuing with cancer treatments is much more complicated. In Mexico, 5,000 new cases of childhood cancer are diagnosed each year. Casa de la Amistad supports more than 1,300 children and youth by providing free-of-cost oncological medications and treatment, shelter, warm nutritional meals, groceries, clothing and educational programs, all free of cost.
Childhood cancer is the leading cause of disease-related death among children and adolescents in Mexico. Because families do not have the financial resources for treatment, many kids never receive the care they require. Treatment costs include medications, surgeries, lab exams and the indirect costs of transport, food and lodging. Loss of employment and incurrent of debts are also common. Further, the economic and social support from the state is inadequate and not available to all.
Our own experience as well as many studies on childhood cancer conclude that financial and social assistance to families are effective in improving pediatric cancer outcomes and in saving lives. These important programs help low income families overcome financial as well as social hardship and get more children into the hands of pediatric oncologists. Your donation means a parent can give their child the opportunity to heal, so their children have the opportunity to dream about their future.
Each year we serve an average of 1,200 children nationwide; and through this initiative we can support many more throughout their treatment. We can also provide psychological guidance, permitting children to emotionally heal from the experience, and grant educational assistance, assuring they dont fall behind and continue in school. Help us give more children and families the immediate and long-term resources they need to live full and happy lives.
