This project will provide healthy, sustainable protein (eggs, meat) and entrepreneurial skills for children at Jemo House children's home in Western Kenya by establishing a chicken and rabbit farm.
Jemo House Children's Home in Maseno, Kenya, cares for 36 children. While providing healthy food each day, the high cost of meat and eggs creates a financial challenge. The children need a source of quality protein for their full physical growth and cognitive development. Jemo House must establish a self-reliant, home-grown protein source to ensure the children's well-being and enable a way to economic sustainability.
Over 2 years the purchase of 50 hens, 5 roosters, 10 does, and 2 bucks of healthy, appropriate breeds for eggs, meat, and breeding stock will provide a regular source of eggs and meat for the children. After hands-on instruction to children and staff on animal husbandry, the surplus eggs and meat can be sold at the local market for additional, self sustaining income. The initial support will cover the purchase of the animals, secure housing, feed, vitamins, and veterinary supplies.
The project guarantees a sustainable source of protein (eggs/meat) for the children, leading to improved health. Animal manure will be used to fertilize a vegetable garden. Selling surplus eggs and offspring, will generate a continuous income stream for the children's home. This financial mechanism ensures the project becomes self-sustaining. The children gain valuable, marketable skills in poultry and rabbit farming, preparing them directly future employment and entrepreneurship
