CHETANA is a special school working with differently-able children. The school has been providing financial and mental support to 50 mentally retarded children. it was academically recognized since 2nd of March, 2001. Integrated approaches have been adopted for the protection of the children through different campaign program in different blocks of Murshidabad with the support of National Trust of Government of India, State level authority and Dept. of Mass Education Extension Dept.
The mentally retarded and handicapped children and their families of this backward district of Murshidabad are socially excluded. These children face major difficulties in participating in family, social, educational, and recreational activities. Bringing out these children from this prolonged seclusion is essential and that is the sole aim of CHETANA, meaning consciousness so that the residents of Murshidabad are conscious about their surrounding and their own children.
CHETANA scrutinizes 50 children in dire need of help and provides them support to overcome their challenges through participation of the children and their families. Suprava conducts special educational programs for these special children, vocational training, sports and cultural activities. They counsel their parents and other family members so that they understand the ways of interaction with their children. These children are educated about the government schemes that are undertaken for them.
1) These children did not have access to bank accounts which they now have. 2) They are provided disability certificates which secures the rights provided to them 3) Since parents are included into the process and thus they can help the children in alternate livelihoods.
