Thank you for your recent support of HOPE's next water and sanitation project in rural Ethiopia. We are thankful for your generous support.
HOPE Ethiopia members of staff are currently collecting the necessary data required to prepare for HOPE UK's next comprehensive development project. This involves conducting surveys on the local springs to ensure the spring yield is sufficient for the size of the community and to ensure that a gravity-fed, spring-capped system will be the best, most efficient and easiest to maintain for the community. Our key objective is to provide local access to clean, safe water, but also to build participation and ownership of the newly planned water system that is sustainable.
With 40 years of experience in this area of Ethiopia, HOPE has developed a specialism in installing spring-capped water systems and no longer digs wells or bore holes. If a spring-capped system is not suited for the community, HOPE declines providing support. Other NGOs and development charities focus on those types of water solutions, while HOPE continues to provide its specialist knowledge where it is needed most.
In addition, work is progressing with surveying the land to propose where the underground water pipeline should be dug and laid. In previous projects, we have found that the landscape sometimes changes prior to laying the pipeline due to flooding and the creation of gully areas. Similarly, sometimes economic policies might force us to modify our plans since the baseline survey was undertaken. This means constant monitoring is required before work commences.
HOPE has found that empowering women has positive effects in multiple areas, such as improving household economic stability; improving children's attendance and performance at school; and maintaining the ownership of water systems. For these reasons, at the outset, HOPE develops plans to work with the local women and increase capacity. Their commitment and involvement is vital for the success of the project and the community's future.
HOPE UK will continue to raise fundraise for this project until the full budget has been raised. Thank you for playing your part. We are grateful.
