Tiny Toones' tough times

By Jaime | Volunteer

Dear supporters

We wish we could send you an update full of good news but unfortunately right now that is difficult. There is some good news, but you will have to wait until the end.

Le'ts start with the difficult news. As you may know, the last four months have been very hard in Cambodia. After a long period where we were spared high numbers of COVID-19 infections, that began to change in March. After being so glad to re-open our centre and all of the classrooms, we again had to close them. In fact, the majority of our students were soon placed in very strict lockdowns as they lived in "red zones" of high infection numbers. COVID is of course easier to spread in densely populated areas like the slum zones where most of our children live.

Cambodia has still not faced as many illnesses and deaths as many of our neighbours, and the situation does appear to be coming under control. The Government has done an excellent job in getting vaccines out to the population, and most of our children's families are now vaccinated. We hope that the end is in sight. However, our students have experienced even greater hardship than ever before, with many more having to work to help their families. Our staff, who are largely from the same neighbourhoods as our children, have also experienced restrictions and hardships throughout this time.

But here is the good news. Thanks to your support - our only income at this time - we haven't had to close permanently, unlike many other NGOs. We have been able to keep our staff on at a basic level and continue working to support the children in their community settings. We are organising food support to the children who have been most at risk.

The fact we are still going is so important. It means not only can we keep providing guidance and relief now but that when we are allowed to open again, we can begin to pick up the pieces, and again give our students hope in the future. If we weren't here, we don't know what these children would do.

And we owe it all to you. Please keep supporting us... and we hope that the next report will be full of much better news.

THANK YOU

The Tiny Toones Family
