Prevent violence and crime in Mexico through music

Summary

This project looks forward to the installation of symphonic orchestras, bands and choirs in vulnerable communities of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. More than 3500 youth have learned and changed their lives through music. These youngsters have few opportunities due to the social situation present in their communities: violence, drug trafficking, family disintegration, social alienation and poverty. In these conditions, programming targeting this population is strongly needed.

Challenge

Different communities throughout Mexico, have few opportunities due to the social situation present in their communities. Violence, drug trafficking, family disintegration, social alienation and poverty. Furthermore, they don't have access to other social programs to engage them in supportive, enriching activities. In these conditions, programs targeting this population is strongly needed. In our experience, music is a powerful medium for positive social change for our youth.

Solution

We will offer the youngsters a space for belonging that will also help shield them from negative influences. It will accept children ages 7 through 18 years old. They will learn how to play an instrument, sing with professional singers in a fun atmosphere. Music is a medium in which the youth can construct a different path for themselves, promote teamwork, respect for others, discipline and love. Not only do they learn about music but they also learn positevly how to live in community.

Long-Term Impact

The young population involvement in our musical communities will help them develop resilience and enables them to become active and committed citizens. Simultaneously theirs families will also be transformed, audiences will understand the music from a different perspective, and the community will change. We are confident that in the long term these musical communities will trive. In ten years from now, we are working to service more than 3,000 youngsters.
