October 1st marks the opening of Chamber Music Northwest’s 50th anniversary season. And what a season it’s going to be! Artistic Director David Shifrin is pulling out all the stops, programming his favorite works, performed by his favorite artists. The crowning concert will be the 50th Anniversary Gala, on July 17, 2020. Mark your calendars now!

Our 2019-20 season opens with Dark Horse Consort, who will play a sparkling program of late Renaissance and early Baroque works for brass, performed on period instruments.  Oct. 9, 7:30pm, Alberta Rose Theatre.

Just two weeks later, our Protégé Project ensemble, the Rolston String Quartet, returns to share their music with local students through our music education access program. In addition, they are performing Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” and other works at the Alberta Rose Theatre on Oct. 27, and a chamber party in a home in the most beautiful setting on Sauvie Island on October 26.

For this anniversary season, CMNW will have two official “Artists-in-Residence”: Bassist Edgar Meyer will perform a solo concert at the Old Church Concert hall November 24, and our ensemble, the Miró Quartet will continue their exploration of the complete cycle of Beethoven quartets in concerts on December 8 and February 6. In addition, they will be involved in several education and community engagement programs.

In March, Gloria Chien, piano and Soovin Kim, violin will be here to offer concerts and engage with our community. Gloria and Soovin have been named our Artistic Director Designates—they will assume their new responsibilities when David Shifrin steps down (after 40 years as Artistic Director!) at the end of the 2019-20 season. Soovin will play a program of unaccompanied violin works by J.S. Bach, then our audiences are in for a real treat when all three team up for an evening of works for clarinet, violin and piano.

The Akropolis Reed Quintet and BodVox dance company will present multiple performances of NINETEEN-TWENTY, inspired by the lively music of the 1920’s. (March 26-April 4 at BodyVox Dance Center). Our winter/fall/spring series concludes with the Jasper String Quartet in an innovative program featuring a new commission by four contemporary composers, each of whom has written a movement of the work depicting one of the four seasons.
