Engaged STEM Learning

The STEM Sessions at Ibadan Grammar School (IGS) were sponsored by IGSOSANA (North America) to offer IGS students opportunities for hands-on STEM enrichment during the 2024 academic year.

IGS Robotics

During the initial 8-week session, 100 participants collaborated in teams to learn programming for both virtual and physical robots. In an additional 6-week session, participants developed and honed their robotics skills by configuring their own platforms and coding physical robots. Collaborative learning combined with teamwork, boosted students' confidence by cultivating their critical thinking skills through real-world problem-solving.

Robotics Club & Career and College Ready

Participants applied mathematical and problem-solving abilities to design and program robots that simulated real-world scenarios. They also had the chance to partake in robotics competitions as part of their team activities. To sustain student engagement in robotics activities, two Robotics Clubs were established for continued involvement and participation.

IGS Engineering Design

Sixty IGS students were selected to participate in hands-on Solar projects that will enhance their understanding of solar energy, encourage them to become solution providers to challenges within their communities, and also advocate for a cleaner, greener future.

Students were grouped into teams of 5 with roles assigned. Team roles include Project Manager, Researcher, Reporter, Materials Manager, and Time Manager. Each team was assigned Solar projects such as Solar-powered houses, Solar-powered cars, and Solar-powered streetlights.

Teacher Professional Development Part 2

During the school year, 45 IGS teachers participated in the Teacher Professional development facilitated by STEMWonders. The essential topics covered in depth include

  • Student Engagement: Students’ engaging in their learning is essential for their academic success and overall development.
  • Differentiating instruction (DI): DI involves tailoring teaching methods and content to accommodate the diverse learning needs of students in a classroom.
  • Student Assessment: Understanding assessment as an ongoing process of gathering, analyzing, and reflecting on evidence to make informed and consistent judgments to improve student learning.
  • Resources: Teachers were provided with resources that will help them succeed with effective teaching practices within their classrooms.
