Dear Friends,
We are inching slowly and steadily towards our goal of providing career training to 100 deaf students. The construction of the first floor of our modest 2 story school building is complete. We bought chairs, tables, blackboard, and school supplies and last month we bought our very first computer. 15 students are currently enrolled at the center and classes started since August of last year. We have a couple of deaf women students who have enrolled in the past month. We hope to fulfill our promise to these young students to teach them the skills that will allow them to earn a livelihood.
We have hired a sign language interpreter who is also teaching basic computers to the students. Search is still on for a qualified teacher who can teach more complex computer courses to the deaf students and help us to develop a well-planned curriculum for them. We received a generous $850 donation from members of the SEEDS organization in USA which promotes the sustainable advancement of people primarily in the state of Orissa. We are deeply grateful to them for this donation. We are also grateful to our one-time and monthly donors without whose support these steps would have been even harder to take. We plan to buy a couple of more computers and educational books with the funds that we have available. The annual examinations and the Class X Board Examinations are on for many of the regular students. Once the exams are finished in March, the students will be back in the classes and the computers will be bought. Class timings have been changed from Saturdays to Thursdays and Fridays between 4-6 pm.
If you have any ideas or suggestions that will help our school, please feel free to share them with us. We are always within reach at westbengaldeaf@gmail.com.
Thanks for your support.

Mithun
"My name is Mithun. I am 15 years old. I am deaf. I live in Asansol in West Bengal, India.
In Asansol I study in Shree Ma Pratibondhi Kalyan Kendra (The Divine Mothers Center for the Welfare of Disabled Children). I wanted to learn about computers but my parents could not afford to send me to a computer learning center where I cannot even hear what is being taught.
We came to know from a neighbor about the newly opened Vocational Training Center for Deaf Students in Kolkata. It was a glimmer of hope for me. There I can gain knowledge and hands on training in computers free of cost. Though I am deaf, I can become independent too and have a career that will help my family to live in a good condition.
I got admitted to the Center on 10-9-2015. I can dream about my future now. My mind is full of hope."
Recent News and Developments about our Deaf School
Search is on for a teacher on a permanent basis. As hard as it is to find qualified teachers it is even harder to find somebody who can impart their knowledge to deaf students. Until we are able to do so, classes are being conducted during the weekends by volunteer teachers. The teachers are employed elsewhere and donate their time during the weekends for these students. Demand for these classes is immense as evidenced by the growing number of students every month. As we are able to hire more teachers on a permanent basis depending on availability of funding, we can accomodate more of these students. So far the classes are being offered free of cost to the students as most of these students come from poor socio-economic backgrounds.
With your support we will fulfill our goal of providing quality career education to 100 deaf students. If you want to make a year end contribution then please consider our project and we will be using it to buy used computers for the students. Thank you for your continued involvement in our project.
If you have any questions please email them to me at westbengaldeaf@gmail.com.
Thank you.

Deaf students
Hi All,
The deaf school has opened for classes. Classes are currently being offered for 2 hours during the weekends by voluntary teachers. We are extremely indebted to these teachers for offering to take classes for the deaf students. The photo below shows teacher Anup Bose, a Bachelors of Visual Arts graduate from Vishva Bharati University imparting his computer knowledge to the students. There is an immense need for these classes as evidenced by the increasing number of students every week. They commute for 2-3 hours from faraway places such as Midnapore, Asansol and Burdwan to attend the school. Our goal is to hire full-time qualified teachers so we can open classes full-time during the week.
The managing committee and trustee board for the deaf school will be formed on November 1st during which the name of the school will be decided. We have also applied for the school registration and expect to get it shortly.
Thank you all for being a part of this exciting journey. We hope we can convey many more positive milestones to you in the days to come. Your support is invaluable to us.
Thank you,
Regards,
Bulbul Ganguly
