Jiban Das Memorial Vocational Training School

Our school has been named ‘Jiban Das Memorial Vocational Training School’ and was formally inaugurated by President Mrs Joshi of the Rotary Club of Calcutta in August 2016. Till 2014 West Bengal Association of the Deaf organized various deaf sport events such as table tennis, badminton, football, cricket, swimming and chess that helped to form a common meeting ground where deaf people could come and socially interact with one another. Then it was realized that in today’s world they need something more: a livelihood to support themselves. But often they lack the basic skills that can earn them their livelihood. This coupled with their disability leaves them behind in our society, isolated and dependent on others. That is how the Training Center for the Deaf was started, where deaf students could be trained in the areas of computer courses, videography and animation, and other classes that can help them to find jobs.

In view of the above goals, the progress so far has been a small milestone that we have achieved. We still have to go a long way depending on availability of resources. We need a good and firm curriculum for the students to follow, dedicated teachers to educate them, computers and other technological resources that students can take advantage of. Classes are being held for 2-3 hours twice a week. We have one existing teacher who teaches MS Office including Word, Powerpoint and Excel, File Management and Internet Access to the students.

We have started the construction of the second floor of the school. The Globalgiving donation funds go strictly to education related tasks not including school construction, and every donation makes a direct difference in the class. We are very thankful to our longtime monthly donor who has believed in our mission and continue to help us. Please consider making a year-end donation and spreading the word about our school.

In the coming months we hope to give you many progress updates from this school. And as always a big thank you for your support. Wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!
