During this reporting period, Kusina ng Kalinga (KNK) served as a frontline feeding response in areas severely affected by recent typhoons, particularly Catanduanes and Northern Palawan, where communities experienced food shortages due to isolation, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted livelihoods.
Through Operation Walang Iwanan, KNK provided hot, freshly cooked meals to children and families when access to food was most difficult. These meals were prepared in community kitchens by trained volunteers and youth leaders, ensuring that nourishment was immediate, dignified, and culturally familiar.
For many families, these meals were the first warm food they received after days of uncertainty.
Feeding Outcomes and Reach
700+ hot meals prepared by GK youth volunteers in Puerto Princesa City
300+ cooked meals distributed directly to families in Magara, Roxas, Northern Palawan
Meals served prioritized children, elderly residents, and families displaced by the typhoon
Feeding operations covered communities located over 100 kilometers from the nearest preparation site
Volunteers began food preparation as early as 4:00 a.m., ensuring meals were cooked fresh, packed safely, and transported the same day to affected areas. Despite long travel times and limited access, all meals reached their intended beneficiaries.
Why Hot Meals Matter in Emergencies
In disaster settings, access to food often depends on relief goods that require cooking or are nutritionally limited. Kusina ng Kalinga addresses this gap by providing ready-to-eat, nutritious meals, especially important for:
Children who may not tolerate canned or dry food
Families without cooking fuel or utensils
Communities experiencing prolonged displacement
By focusing on hot meals, KNK supports not only physical nourishment but also emotional comfort and stability during crisis periods.
Voices from the Community
“We had no way to cook after the storm. When the hot food arrived, it felt like someone remembered us.”
— Parent beneficiary, Northern Palawan (name withheld)
Parents shared that receiving cooked meals eased immediate stress and allowed them to focus on caring for their children and assessing damage to their homes and livelihoods.
Challenges and Our Response
Limited access to affected areas
Some communities were difficult to reach due to damaged roads and long distances.
Response: KNK coordinated closely with local parishes and community leaders and mobilized youth volunteers willing to travel extended distances to ensure food delivery continued.
High demand for meals amid limited resources
The number of families needing food exceeded initial projections.
Response: We prioritized children and the most vulnerable households while continuing to mobilize additional donations and in-kind support to sustain feeding operations.
Use of Donations
Donations received through GlobalGiving directly supported feeding operations, including:
Purchase of food ingredients (rice, vegetables, protein, seasonings)
Cooking fuel and basic kitchen supplies
Food preparation and packaging materials
Transportation of meals from kitchens to affected communities
Every donation helped translate resources into hot meals served, often within hours of preparation.
