Summary: What will this project do? This project gives 200 orphaned and separated refugee children in Kampala a safe place to heal, learn and simply be children. Many lost their parents to the wars in DR Congo and Sudan; others were orphaned here in Uganda. Through HCP's child care centre in Rubaga, they receive daily early learning and play, nutritious meals, psychosocial support from trained refugee caregivers, and school kits, while the foster and kinship carers who took them in are supported
Aminata* was five when fighting in eastern DR Congo took both her parents; she reached Kampala with a neighbour and nothing else. Her story repeats across this city. Uganda hosts Africa's largest refugee population, six in ten of them children, and nearly 48,000 arrived unaccompanied or separated. In Kampala's poorest neighbourhoods, orphaned refugee children live with overstretched foster carers, out of school, often hungry, carrying trauma no child should bear alone.
HCP, a refugee-led organization in Rubaga Division, runs a child care programme built by people who fled the same wars; several caregivers reached Uganda as refugee children themselves. Our centre gives orphaned children a daily safe space: early learning for ages 2 to 6, guided play in our own yard, nutritious meals, and psychosocial sessions where children heal in their own languages. We provide school kits, visit each child at home, and support the foster and kinship carers who hold them.
A child stabilized today is a childhood saved from the street. Children who receive early learning, consistent care and healing from trauma stay in school, form healthy attachments and grow into self-reliant adults; UNICEF ranks quality early childhood care among the highest-return investments in any child's life. By strengthening family-based care rather than institutions, this project builds a community where orphaned refugee and Ugandan children grow up belonging, not merely surviving.
