At Age Action, our Care and Repair service helps older people continue to live safely and independently in their own homes by providing free support with small DIY jobs and repairs.
For an older person living alone, something as simple as a loose handrail, a broken light fitting or a difficult step can become more than an inconvenience. It can affect their confidence moving around their home and, in some cases, increase the risk of a fall.
Recently, Care and Repair supported an older woman living alone who had become increasingly worried about using the steps at the back of her home. The handrail had become loose and unstable, making it difficult for her to safely access her garden. Having experienced a fall previously, she had gradually stopped using the steps altogether rather than risk another accident.
After contacting Care and Repair, one of our team visited her home to assess the problem. The handrail was securely refitted and the steps were checked for any other potential hazards. While there, our handyperson was also able to take care of a couple of other small jobs around the home that she had been unable to manage herself.
These were relatively simple repairs, but they made an important difference. With a secure handrail in place, she could once again use the steps with greater confidence and safely access her garden.
Situations like this demonstrate why Care and Repair is about much more than DIY. Small changes around the home can help reduce risks, restore confidence and enable an older person to continue doing everyday things independently.
Our Care and Repair teams support older people with jobs ranging from fitting grab rails and changing difficult-to-reach light bulbs to securing furniture and carrying out other minor home repairs. We also prioritise support for older people returning home following a hospital stay, helping to ensure their home is safe for their return.
This service is provided free of charge and continues to make a meaningful difference thanks to the generosity of our supporters.
Your support helps us provide the practical assistance older people need to feel safe and confident at home, protecting something incredibly valuable – their independence.
