At Age Action, our Care and Repair service is built on a simple but powerful idea: that older people should be able to live safely, comfortably, and independently in their own homes for as long as possible. For many, however, everyday maintenance tasks can become difficult, and even small hazards around the home can pose serious risks.
Recently, our team supported John, an older man living alone. John had begun to notice small issues around his home that he could no longer manage himself. A loose bannister on the stairs, a faulty light in the hallway, and an uneven back step were all causing increasing concern, particularly as he had already experienced a minor fall earlier in the year.
Following a referral, a Care and Repair volunteer visited John’s home and carried out a series of essential repairs. The bannister was secured, lighting was restored to improve visibility, and the back step was stabilised to reduce the risk of trips and falls.
“It’s a weight off my mind,” John shared. “I knew these things needed to be fixed, but I just couldn’t do them myself anymore. Now I feel much safer in my own home.”
John’s experience reflects the reality for many older people across Ireland. What may seem like minor household issues can quickly escalate into significant safety concerns if left unaddressed. Through early intervention, Care and Repair helps prevent accidents, supports confidence in the home, and reduces the likelihood of more serious health complications.
This service continues to make a meaningful difference thanks to the support of our donors. Your generosity enables our team to respond to those in need, carry out practical repairs, and provide reassurance to older people and their families.
By supporting Care and Repair, you are helping to ensure that older people can continue to live with dignity, security, and independence because everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home.
