As we grow older basic household tasks can become very difficult to manage. People who have been house-proud all of their lives find themselves unable to maintain their homes. Ultimately this can make the difference between staying at home and moving to residential care. Care & Repair uses a pool of volunteers to carry out DIY jobs for older people free of charge. The most common services required by older people are: gardening, painting, security locks, smoke alarms, moving furniture
As we grow older basic household tasks can become very difficult to manage. People who have been house-proud all of their lives find themselves unable to maintain their homes. Often a husband or wife has passed away and this adds to the problem. Even something as simple as changing a light bulb can become a major problem for an older person who is not in a position to climb on a chair to change the bulb. Other household tasks such as gardening and carpentry work cause similar problems
The Care & Repair programme can help to solve these problems for older people in our communities by enabling volunteers to do DIY jobs in older people's homes free of charge. Jobs include gardening, painting, moving furniture, installing smoke alarms, security locks and chains, etc. We also keep lists of reliable local tradesmen who can provide quotations for larger jobs and won't attempt to "rip-off" older customers.
The aim of Care & Repair is to enable older people to remain living in their own homes in increased safety and comfort for as long as they wish. We aim to do 32,500 jobs for older people throughout Ireland in 2016.
