Project Report | May 22, 2020
Improving accessibility and quality of treatment

By Heather Rendell | Head of Corporate, Community and Events

Thank you so much for your kind support of World Child Cancer’s project in Myanmar, where we are working to improve the diagnosis, access to treatment and quality of care for children with cancer.

This project has transformed the lives of 674 children with cancer who were newly diagnosed and treated at Yangon Children’s Hospital (YCH) and Mandalay Children’s Hospital (MCH) over the last 12 months by improving access to, and quality of, the hospitals’ childhood cancer services.

We increased capacity of paediatricians and GPs to detect early warning signs of childhood cancer and refer patients quickly to YCH and MCH

Just 25% of the estimated 2,650 children to develop cancer each year in Myanmar are diagnosed. During this project we delivered ‘training of trainer’ sessions on Early Warning Signs to 38 healthcare professionals.

These professionals subsequently delivered the training to 284 primary health care providers (GPs, nurses and basic health staff) on the symptoms and curability of childhood cancers and managing and treating children with cancer.

We improved capacity of paediatric oncologists, nurses and lab technicians to diagnose and treat children with cancer at YCH and MCH

This was achieved by supporting expert paediatric oncologists from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Cambridge University Hospitals to travel to Mandalay and Yangon, and conduct online sessions with staff.

We also developed vital nutrition support at Yangon Children’s Hospital to improve children’s health and help them cope with treatment. This has already had positive impact on children being treated for cancer at the hospital, benefitting 226 patients on the nutrition programme since April 2019.

We funded extra shifts for senior nurses to provide mentoring to junior nurses, passing on invaluable knowledge and skills.

We provided support for drugs to help ensure children receive high-quality treatment as well as reduce the financial burden of treatment costs on families of children with cancer at YCH. With your support, we purchased essential chemotherapy, antibiotics and antivirals for patients, giving the 674 children treated at YCH and MCH improved access to the medication they need.

Improved the ward facilities at MCH by establishing a new Day Centre on the ground floor of the hospital. The Day Centre opened in July 2019 and since then, has benefitted 341 children treated for cancer and for blood diseases.

Provided counselling services to 88 staff, children and family members in YCH’s paediatric oncology unit to support them in managing the emotional impact of childhood cancer.

755 transport grants were provided to the families of 169 children with cancer to ease the financial burden of travelling to YCH and to help reduce treatment abandonment.

Thanks to your support that we can continue to set precedents for the improvement of cancer care in Myanmar. Thank you for helping to give children with cancer the gift of growing up!
