Dear Donors:

Just a little over one month ago more than 100 children who stutter, speech-language pathologists and graduate students gathered on the shores of Big Blue Lake in Holton, MI for an amazing week of laughter, tears, networking, learning and fun.

Many powerful experiences happen during the week of camp and others occur once our campers head home and back to school.  Just recently we received this email from a parent of a high school aged camper:

"On the first day of school my son came home and told me that this new teacher made each student get up in front of the class and talk about themselves.  You know my heart sank, until all of a sudden he gets this big grin on his face and says, "I did it!" I asked him if he was scared, he said, "no mom, I just got up, took a breath, and talked and I didn't stutter!" Now  if you know my son like the rest of us and I know you do, that is just not him. I am so proud of him and I told him so. He said mom, don't cry. He says he is not going to do that in his English class because the bullies are in there, but THIS IS A BIG STEP!

Will you please share this with  every one who was involved with him these past few years. There is such a difference in him when he gets home from camp! You all make such a difference in his life and I am so thankful!. I just had to share this with you!"

Stories like this are what keeps each of us working as hard as we can to make a difference in the world for young people who stutter and we COULD NOT do it without YOU.

We would like to take the time to THANK EACH OF YOU for your generous donation to our program

Camp Shout Out: Youth Who Stutter is a program born out of a passion to provide help for children and teens who stutter, to make their world a better place.

We believe great communicators change the world. We believe those who stutter can learn to be great communicators.  We believe those who stutter can change the world. We believe they can teach the world to listen.

We are honored by your support of our program and hope you will continue to join us in making the world a better place for young people who stutter.

Dear Camp Shout Out Friends:

We are less than 8 weeks away from our 4th season of Camp Shout Out: Youth Who Stutter and we would like to take the time to give a ‘Shout Out’ to EACH OF YOU for your generous donation to our program.  Our campers are going be amazed at the activities we have been able to plan because of your contributions.

One parent of a camper told us: “Camp Shout Out is the one place where my son feels like he belongs. It is a space where not only is he working on his communication skills, but where he also has friends. Friends who understand what he goes through daily. My son has been bullied about his stuttering, but when he comes home from Camp Shout Out he sticks up for himself. His confidence soars!”

Camp Shout Out: Youth Who Stutter is a program born out of a passion to provide help for children and teens who stutter, to make their world a better place and with your help we are meeting that goal.

We are honored by your support of our program and hope you will continue to join us in making the world a better place for young people who stutter.

Dear Donors:

The snow has melted, the lake is sparkling, camper enrollments are in, speech pathologists and graduate students are registered, activities are planned and now all we need is for summer to arrive!

Returning campers have reported to us that they can’t wait to ride horses, zoom down the zip line, climb the rock wall and work on their communication skills. Most of all they can’t wait to see their ‘camp family’ and make new friends.

As we are gearing up for our 4th session of Camp Shout Out: Youth Who Stutter, we would like to take the time to THANK EACH OF YOU for your generous donation to our program.

Camp Shout Out: Youth Who Stutter is a program born out of a passion to provide help for children and teens who stutter, to make their world a better place and we believe with your help we are meeting that goal.

One of our new campers wrote an essay and stated the following: “……I WILL make a change in the world for the stuttering community, whether it’s just a simple paper about us, or a life changing discovery. We all have to start somewhere and I’m starting at Camp Shout Out”

We are honored by your support of our program and hope you will continue to join us in making the world a better place for young people who stutter.

You Can Change The World
You Can Change The World

Fifteen year old Ted had stuttered as long as he could remember.  Ted had been teased by kids in his school and neighborhood, he was laughed at when he talked and in 4th grade his teacher marked him down on an oral report because of his stuttering.

Ted was looking forward to attending Camp Shout Out for his very first time. He said that he wanted to learn to be more social, see how other kids his age dealt with stuttering, and maybe learn some new strategies. Because of generous donations through globalgiving we were able to provide Ted with a full scholarship.  He was packed and ready to go.  The week before the start of camp, Ted's mom called  to withdraw him from the camp roster, it seems that the family had car trouble and were not going to be able to drive him to camp, 5 hours from their home.

The camp staff quickly got together and made arrangements for Ted to fly to camp, using donations obtained through globalgiving. Ted, who had never flown before, boarded the plane and made his way to Michigan.  That was the first but not the only couragous thing Ted did during his week at Camp Shout Out.

Ted joined 35 campers, speech-language pathologists,  graduate students,  volunteers, recreation staff, and faculty at the 3rd session of Camp Shout Out on Big Blue Lake in Muskegon County, Michigan.  He participated in speech therapy embedded within everyday activities.  He swam, climbed a rock wall, rode horses, slept in a cabin with his peers, went boating, built a rocket, and most of all, Ted COMMUNICATED!  He shared perceptions and feelings about stuttering and about being bullied, with small groups and in front of the entire camp! Ted grew taller during his week at Camp Shout Out, both physically and emotionally!

When the camp session was over and everybody had transitioned back to their own schools and jobs we received a letter from Ted's mom:

"It just does not seem enough to just say "thank you." You all have truly touched Ted's life and to hear all of his positive experiences with camp and everybody he met, brings me to tears! We will be putting to good use the things that he has learned and looking forward to more information as it comes in. This experience was so amazing for him, that when he got up for his first day of school, he had no fear! He had a huge smile on his face and was ready to face this new chapter in his life! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!"

We wanted to share this story with you, because your donation helped to make a real and positive impact on this young man's life.  If it were not for you and your contribution Ted would not have been able to attend Camp Shout Out and learn that the most important thing for him to do is to: KEEP ON TALKING!

We would like to give you a thank you and a Shout Out for helping to change the world for kids who stutter!

Kind Regards,

Camp Shout Out 2013 was better than ever!

We had close to 100 participants from all over the world who came together to build a community that supported young people who stutter.

Every day the campers challenged themselves to become better communicators. They volunteered to read announcements, to talk over the loud speaker and to deliver messages. They practiced talking on the phone, ordering from a menu, and telling jokes to friends. They worked hard and took advantage of the opportunity they were given.  Campers also participated in traditional summer camp activities: they swam, rode horses, walked on the high ropes course...and of course, sang ridiculous camp songs.  Parents reported that their children came home from camp full of confidence and willingness to speak more at home and at school.

The speech-language pathologists and graduate students participated in state-of-the-art training from several well known specialists in fluency disorders.  They were able to learn about working with kids who stutter in a way that they will be able to take home and immediately use with other young people.

Camp Shout Out is changing the world for young people who stutter.  We can't wait to do it again in 2014.
