Dear Donors:
Just a little over two months ago more than 100 children who stutter, speech-language pathologists and graduate students gathered on the shores of Big Blue Lake in Holton, MI for an amazing week of laughter, tears, networking, learning and fun.
Many powerful experiences happen during the week of camp and others occur once our campers head home and back to school. Just recently we received this email responding a few statements from a parent of a high school aged camper:
I would encourage any parent who has a child with a stuttering or fluency issue to attend Camp Shout Out because:
"That child needs to experience a sense of community with other kids who share his/her struggle. The Camp Shout Out experience is THE most effective way to internalize the fact that Lots of kids struggle with fluency issues, and most of them are super cool kids, on their way to becoming super great communicators. Camp Shout Out has helped my son “own” his stuttering. Does that mean he never stutters??? Of course not. But he can choose to be a confident and effective communicator."
The greatest gift Camp Shout gave my child was:
"Independence. My son’s independence has soared this year since returning from CSO. He has not only taken the responsibility to call and schedule his own ortho appointments, hair cuts and the like (he has conquered his phone fear); he has taken over the grocery shopping for our family. His frustrating search for some item or another lead him to summon his focus resources (proactive, assertive, confident ,effective ,attentive) to ask an employee for help!!!:))) For him, and for us, his parents, this is huge growth . We are so happy and proud."
More than anything Camp Shout Out provided my son with a sense of:
"safety and belonging. If I had to describe what this experience meant to my child I think the best way to sum it up would be to say…..Maturation under the influence of some truly wonderful people of great character"
Stories like this are what keeps each of us working as hard as we can to make a difference in the world for young people who stutter and we COULD NOT do it without YOU.
We would like to take the time to THANK EACH OF YOU for your generous donation to our program
Camp Shout Out: Youth Who Stutter is a program born out of a passion to provide help for children and teens who stutter, to make their world a better place.
We believe great communicators change the world. We believe those who stutter can learn to be great communicators. We believe those who stutter can change the world. We believe they can teach the world to listen.
We are honored by your support of our program and hope you will continue to join us in making the world a better place for young people who stutter.
