Dear Supporters,
Free drop-in educational centres are scarce around the country and as a consequence, they take in children of all ages. In our centre, we teach English to children between the ages of 4 and 16. This created difficulties in teaching because different age groups demand different teaching methods and approach. First we decided to separate the students into two groups – younger and older one and have two separate classes. The facilities at the centre include a roofed space for teaching and a garden where children can play. Our current set up is that we teach one group of students while the other is playing in the garden and then switching them. This presents significant issues during bad weather or the rainy season because the other group cannot go and play in the garden but stay in the same space with the class. Learning process in such an environment is very limited.
We have recognized the need for an additional classroom that could be built at the same location and decided to organize a fundraiser. A big part of Cambodian contemporary culture are communal work out sessions. So, every morning and every evening there is a very cheerful Zumba class on the riverfront of the mighty Mekong. For a week, we participated in every Zumba class held at the riverside and, to be honest, we became an attraction on itself. In total, we managed to raise £900. After the rainy season stops, we plan to start transforming a part of the garden into an additional classroom.
Thank you for your contributions to our Cambodia Classrooms project. They will help us increase the quality of our classes and make our impact on the local community stronger.
With Gratitude,
Cambodia Classrooms
