Reducing Poverty and Inequality in Urban Cambodia

These past three months we have again been fundraising to support our students in Kampong Cham. Our main ongoing project is one of our local education centres where students can receive free Khmer, Maths, and English tuition. 

The major challenge facing this centre is its infrastructure. Built as a single-room school, the centre has no permanent walls and relies upon its foundations and supports for a roof. As such, throughout the rainy season (May-November) the school regularly floods and consequently students cannot attend. Further to building flood-proof walls, we would also like to support the school to convert an area of its garden into a second smaller classroom so that the school may provide multiple classes at once, as it currently supports students aged 4-16 years old. Through a second permanent structure, these students would be able to be split based on age so that they may be better supported. 

We are currently running a fundraiser to support this project - a Zumba-thon. In Kampong Cham a popular form of daily exercise is Zumba, which takes place on the riverside everyday 5am-6am and 5pm-6:30pm. For one week, we will have representatives present at every Zumba session, attempting to keep up with the locals. With a target of 1000GBP we are hoping to far surpass this goal.

Our work supporting classroom renovations has seen our biggest fundraiser so far this year, as well as plans in motion to renovate the play area outside one of our main centres in Kampong Cham.

Over the last three months we have been working hard to build funds for our students in the local English centre. This centre is designed for students from the most underprivileged areas across the province of Kampong Cham. In this centre, they can learn English, Khmer and Maths with no cost. Each day we lead English classes to enhance our students’ opportunities for skilled employment or higher education.

In April we led our most ambitious fundraiser yet in which our five volunteers raced each other to the Cambodian southern islands, competing a series of challenges on route. These ranged from reaching peculiar and undiscovered landmarks, to spending the least money whilst travelling. Our volunteers raised nearly $1000 in just one week.

These funds will be spent renovating the outside area of the English centre. Our students currently have no space to play and no opportunity to sit out of the sun during the hot season. This play area will include a shaded area with benches for students to enjoy quiet time out of the sun, as well as a flat, grassed area to play games safely.

With a shaded area outside, our students will be able to learn and study in this area and in the main classroom thereby doubling our class size. This will also allow for two classes to be taught simultaneously, enabling our students to receive double the teaching time.

We are looking forward for these renovations to improve our students quality of both learning and play and look forward to beginning renovations next month.
