Maternal Health Update

By Shanna Ungate | Development & Communications Manager

In 2023, our program witnessed a significant increase in prenatal visits, reaching approximately 5,000, up from 4,300 in the previous year.

We broadened our maternal health services to include two new clinics in Bas-Limbe and Roche-Plate. At Bas-Limbe, we enhanced our diagnostic capabilities with a new ultrasound machine. A newly appointed midwife now leads the program. We also strengthened our team with five additional maternal and pediatric nurses. These nurses completed a month-long intensive training and a six-month program under obstetricians-gynecologists to master obstetric ultrasounds and their interpretation. This training has enabled us to provide over 900 sonograms, significantly improving our prenatal care.

Dieuveula is from Massabiel in Camp-Coq, Haiti, and her story underscores the impact of our work. Living with her extended family and partner Philius, Dieuveula faced numerous challenges in her journey through motherhood. Her second pregnancy ended in stillbirth, and she experienced complications with her subsequent deliveries, including low birth weight twins and severe bleeding during her fourth child's birth at home.

When she became pregnant for the fifth time, Dieuveula sought care at C2C after learning about the clinic through our team of community health workers. Her consultations at C2C revealed moderate malnutrition and anemia, which she had been battling without knowledge. Throughout her pregnancy, she achieved a healthier weight and improved her hemoglobin levels, setting the stage for a safer delivery in a hospital. Dieuveula credits C2C with restoring her faith in healthcare, especially after a community health worker braved treacherous conditions to reach her home when heavy rains made roads impassable, preventing her from attending an appointment.
