With the most recent outbreak of COVID-19 sweeping through Southeast Asia and Vietnam in particular, KOTO Villa was closed at different times following Government measures. This has put great pressure on KOTO’s programs as we are trying our best to provide the basic needs and high-quality training to our current 100 trainees.
During lockdown, all classes are provided online with extra tutoring and mentoring sessions conducted in-house by staff and volunteers. As the restaurant is now closed, it is a chance for all trainees to revise what they have learned and put more time into learning English. KOTO also organizes in-house cooking, barista, sommelier and pastry competitions to help trainees maintain their morale and motivation for learning. Trainees also have access to in-house yoga, music and gymnastics activities.
The recent developments in the pandemic has pushed the KOTO team to be more creative and active in our fundraising activities. We are organizing an online concert fundraiser on September 4, 2021 with the participation of well-known and award-winning Vietnamese singers and musicians to raise enough funding to provide nutritious meals to our trainees during the lockdown period. Please follow our event updates on our Facebook page and register for a spot to participate in this amazing online concert.
Amid the lockdown, we did however receive great news: Jimmy Pham, our Founder and CEO, has been awarded the Waislitz Global Citizens' Choice Award which was evaluated on merit for his achievements in reducing extreme poverty. He has been honoured under the category of Global Citizens' Choice Award with the most votes globally. Jimmy is the first Vietnamese Australian to win this prestigious award which further highlights the importance of social enterprise as a means of helping people lift themselves out of poverty and live their lives with pride and dignity. With the current situation, it’s vital that we remain in operation and this award is a testament to that. Jimmy, as well as KOTO, would like to dedicate this award to all of you who have believed in us and supported us on this journey!
Last but not least, we have found a winner for the Inspirational Stories & Photography Contest organized by the KOTO Alumni Community. The incredible story of Hai, a KOTO alumni, and how he battled life struggles to become a proud owner of the Sunhouse Cafe in his hometown, once again reminded us not to give up and to pursue our dreams no matter what. We hope Hai’s powerful story could give a beam of sunlight to your day: https://www.facebook.com/know.one.teach.one/posts/3081113268785026
