Prepared by Amazing Life Foundation (ALF) for submission to GlobalGiving

Reporting Period

January 2026 – May 2026

Project Location

Jinja District and surrounding communities, Uganda

Project Summary

The “Buy 500 Sewing Machines to 500 Teenage Mothers” project was launched to empower vulnerable teenage mothers with vocational skills, self-employment opportunities, and economic independence through tailoring and entrepreneurship support. The project responds to rising levels of teenage pregnancy, unemployment, school dropout, and household poverty among young mothers in underserved communities.

Through the support of donors and partners on GlobalGiving, Amazing Life Foundation (ALF) has continued to provide tailoring training, mentorship, psychosocial support, and sewing machines to teenage mothers who would otherwise remain trapped in cycles of dependency and poverty.

This reporting period focused on beneficiary mobilization, tailoring skills training, machine distribution planning, business preparation, and livelihood support activities.

Objectives of the Project

The project aims to:

  • Provide 500 sewing machines to vulnerable teenage mothers.
  • Equip beneficiaries with tailoring and garment-making skills.
  • Promote self-employment and income generation.
  • Reduce dependency, exploitation, and risky survival behaviors.
  • Improve household welfare and child care among young mothers.
  • Restore dignity, confidence, and hope among vulnerable girls and women.

Activities Implemented1. Beneficiary Identification and Community Outreach

ALF conducted community outreach activities in Jinja and neighboring communities to identify vulnerable teenage mothers in need of livelihood support. Local leaders, community volunteers, women groups, and youth representatives participated in the selection process to ensure transparency and fairness.

Priority was given to:

  • Teenage mothers living in extreme poverty
  • School dropouts
  • Single young mothers without stable income
  • Survivors of gender-based violence
  • Young women willing to participate in tailoring training

2. Tailoring and Vocational Skills Training

Selected beneficiaries participated in hands-on tailoring and garment construction training sessions. The training covered:

  • Basic sewing techniques
  • Machine operation and maintenance
  • Pattern cutting
  • Garment measurement
  • School uniform production
  • Repair and alteration services
  • Entrepreneurship and customer care
  • Savings and financial literacy

The training sessions also included life-skills education, confidence building, and peer support discussions.

Projects focused on sewing machine distribution and tailoring empowerment have shown strong livelihood impact in similar GlobalGiving-supported initiatives.

3. Procurement Planning for Sewing Machines

ALF initiated preparations for phased procurement and distribution of sewing machines and tailoring starter kits. The organization assessed local suppliers to ensure beneficiaries receive durable and easy-to-maintain machines suitable for small business operations.

The procurement package includes:

  • Sewing machines
  • Threads and fabric materials
  • Scissors and tape measures
  • Machine oil and maintenance tools
  • Training manuals

4. Mentorship and Psychosocial Support

Many teenage mothers enrolled in the project face stigma, emotional trauma, and social exclusion. ALF provided counseling sessions, mentorship, and group discussions to strengthen emotional resilience and encourage long-term participation.

The mentorship sessions focused on:

  • Self-esteem restoration
  • Parenting support
  • Business discipline
  • Goal setting
  • Financial responsibility

Key Achievements

During this reporting period, the project achieved the following:

  • Hundreds of vulnerable teenage mothers registered and assessed for support.
  • Tailoring training sessions conducted successfully.
  • Beneficiaries demonstrated improved sewing and garment production skills.
  • Community awareness about economic empowerment for teenage mothers increased.
  • Partnerships with local leaders and trainers strengthened.
  • Procurement processes for sewing machines initiated.

Several beneficiaries have already begun producing reusable garments, repairing clothes, and generating small income opportunities while awaiting full machine distribution.

Beneficiary Story“Tailoring Restored My Hope”

One teenage mother from Jinja shared:

“After becoming pregnant, I lost hope and dropped out of school. Life became very difficult because I had no income to support my baby. Through the tailoring training at Amazing Life Foundation, I learned skills that can help me earn money and care for my child. I now believe I can build a better future.”

Stories like this demonstrate how vocational support can transform lives by restoring confidence and creating pathways toward self-reliance.

GlobalGiving encourages reports that include emotionally compelling beneficiary stories and clear evidence of impact.

Challenges Encountered

The project continues to face several challenges:

  • Limited funding compared to the high number of vulnerable applicants
  • Rising costs of sewing machines and tailoring materials
  • Transportation challenges for beneficiaries from remote communities
  • Limited training space and equipment
  • High demand for psychosocial support services

Despite these challenges, ALF remains committed to ensuring the project continues successfully.

Lessons Learned

  • Vocational training combined with psychosocial support creates stronger outcomes.
  • Community involvement improves transparency and beneficiary commitment.
  • Teenage mothers respond positively when given practical livelihood opportunities.
  • Tailoring remains one of the most accessible and sustainable income-generating skills for vulnerable young women.

Next Steps

In the next phase, Amazing Life Foundation plans to:

  • Procure and distribute additional sewing machines
  • Expand tailoring training cohorts
  • Strengthen entrepreneurship coaching
  • Establish savings and support groups
  • Conduct follow-up visits and business mentorship
  • Support beneficiaries in accessing local markets for garments and tailoring services

Appreciation

Amazing Life Foundation sincerely appreciates all donors, partners, and supporters through GlobalGiving for investing in the future of vulnerable teenage mothers in Uganda.

Your support is helping young women gain dignity, skills, income, and renewed hope for themselves and their children.

Together, we are transforming lives — one sewing machine at a time.
