In northwest Syria, years of conflict have denied children safe spaces to play and develop essential social skills. As a result, 80% of those who don't attend kindergarten drop out of primary school. In this project, Piece of Syria operates a free kindergarten providing Arabic, English, math, and psychosocial care. Each year, 300 children gain the foundation they need to succeed in school. Your support helps build a future of hope, learning, and stability for Syria's next generation.
The nearly 13-year war in Syria since 2011 turned education from a right into a luxury. Before the conflict, primary enrollment was 99.6%, but dropped as low as 6% in some areas. Children missing 2-3 years tend to drop out, creating a lost generation. Despite urgent needs, education funding lags behind medical and food aid. Many teachers leave due to unpaid or low wages, reducing quality and numbers. Dropout rates rise. Though Assad's regime fell in 2024, tensions remain and the crisis is severe
Since 2016, we have run a free kindergarten for 4-6-year-olds, offering basic education and activities like art, music, and sports to support psychosocial care and social skills. We also provide teacher training on class management and student behavior. 80% of participants report increased confidence. These skills have long-lasting impact and are shared among teachers, improving education quality and reducing dropout risks despite the challenges of war.
Kindergarten offers children basic academic skills and psychosocial support in a safe space, helping them adjust smoothly to primary school. A 2024 survey found that nearly 80% of Syrian children who missed kindergarten dropped out of primary school. In contrast, dropout rates among our students are below 10%, with many earning academic awards. Early childhood education plays a crucial role in long-term school success.
