Mercy In Action imagines, builds, funds, and gives ongoing financial and practical support to midwife-led birth centers in the Philippines. These are created for families living in poverty, and to date, more than 17,400 babies have been born free of charge in our safe and respectful facilities. This newest Birth Center is a non-profit venture called Imago Dei Health & Birth Center and will be a beacon of hope to mothers, babies, and their families living in the Subic Bay area on Luzon Island.
The problem is that women in many parts of the Philippines do not have easy access to quality health care while pregnant, and services around pregnancy and giving birth are hard to find or afford. As a result, women often get no prenatal care. Sadly, mothers and babies are both at risk of dying in childbirth when they have no skilled birth attendant to care for them during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Preventable causes are anemia, hemorrhage, infection, hypertension, and obstructed labor.
This project, built right in the center of an urban community, has the potential to empower women to deliver healthy babies. It will save lives and cause families to thrive for decades to come by improving maternal and newborn health surrounding pregnancy and childbirth. We not only provide a safe space for delivery in a compassionate environment, but we provide many extras, such as vitamins, home visits, childbirth and parenting education, counseling, and holistic support for the entire family.
Mercy In Action has delivered 17,400 babies in the Philippines so far, and we know for sure that our birth centers are saving lives, as our neonatal survival rate is 4 times better than the country of the Philippines stats. Women say that to birth at Mercy In Action is to be empowered to survive, to have a healthy baby, and to be better mothers. This new building will multiply the good we can do, and all care is free: medical services, vitamins, baby clothes, and love is given freely to all!
