Nepal Project Report - April 2014

During this reporting period in one subproject 139 project families comprising from both original and pass on groups have earned a total sum of NPR 1,323,586 from goat-keeping which shows that on an average each project family has made a an income of NPR 9,522 in six months; while another 34 project families have earned NPR 16,381 each by selling milk and milk products.
Project families are continuing kitchen gardening and have increased the consumption of fresh vegetables. 208 project families have adopted kitchen gardening and are cultivating vegetables through improved cultivation techniques, and were also able to sell some amount of vegetable at the nearby markets. On an average, each family earned about NPR 9,422 from veg. sell.
As of this reporting period, 7 project families have installed improved cooking stoves; while 4 improved toilets have been constructed which has ultimately supported for the good health and hygiene of the project families.
188 project families have planted 22,000 saplings of fodder and forage by utilizing barren and sloppy lands and the territories of their farm lands.

Nepal Project Update - Jan 2014

Project families have earned from NPR 40,000 to 100,000 each as the semi-annual income during this reporting period. Some of the SHG members of earned up to NPR 50,000 from tomatoes cultivation by applying organic vegetable farming techniques. Further, 60 improved toilets have been constructed and are being used properly.After receiving different slots of the trainings, communities members have maintained social harmony being united and supporting each other. Similarly, project families have cultivated vegetables by using organic manures and have been consuming fresh vegetables daily. It has supported them to be healthy. Besides, they have applied improved animal management technology. Discrimination based on caste, race, gender and religion has remarkably reduced. Community members appreciate each other’s feelings, thoughts and ideas and share for betterment of themselves.Increased group leadership has come up with increased and effective coordination and collaboration with different stakeholders for different developmental activities. Increased awareness about the sanitation, health and hygiene has supported to undertake sanitation campaigns, keep the surroundings neat and clean. 11 SHGs out of 12 have constructed their own community buildings and have also constructed 3 drinking water tanks and taps.

Nepal Project Update - October 2013

In one subproject, 135 original families and 70 POG families received the gift of buffalo. Since then, project participants have not only begun increasing their household income through the training and inputs provided by the project, but they also initiated projects for the benefit of the entire community. In one of the community’s self-review and planning sessions, it was noted that a main limitation to their increased income from goats and buffalo was a lack of suitable roads for motor vehicles. So in their own initiative and effort, the members of the Gayeatri Pariwar Bachat Samuha group have were able to build a road by lobbying $1,149 from the Kamal Mai Village Development Committee (VDC) and the District Development Office. The community members donated two weeks’ worth of labor for this project. Men from the community also gave their full support for this project. The road was built and joins the Kamalamai VDC with the capital of the district, providing greater access to markets.
