Summary

Thousands of children with disabilities across Kenya lack access to assistive devices, limiting their ability to fully engage with their families and communities. To fill this gap, SEP will build an Assistive Technology Innovation and Training Center: a facility dedicated to producing high-quality and cost effective assistive devices, tailored to the unique needs of each child. The Center will provide reliable access to locally made solutions, empowering more children to play, learn, and thrive.

Challenge

Across Kenya, thousands of children with disabilities in rural and low-income settings face barriers to living dignified lives. They lack access to assistive devices limiting their potential to participate in their families and communities. Without the right equipment and training, children remain confined and isolated, in uncomfortable positions, unable to build essential developmental skills. Demand is very high and our current production is limited by the size of our temporary workshop.

Solution

SEP will build an Assistive Technology Innovation and Training Center, a facility geared towards producing quality, customised, cost effective assistive devices. It provides the opportunity to expand production and distribution. The caregivers will be trained in use and maintenance of the device. The current workshop produces 20 devices per month but with the new workshop, SEP will be able to produce 50 devices (chairs, standing frames, therapy materials, splints) per month.

Long-Term Impact

The Center will create lasting impact in the lives of 400 children with disabilities per year and their families due to expansion and increased production. It will ensure consistent access to quality, locally made customised devices at little to no cost. Trained caregivers will use the devices correctly resulting in proper positioning, making the children comfortable. This will enable them to move, learn, play, reach their full potential and participate more fully in family and community life.
