How Girl Advocates Are Using Safe Spaces to Spark Transformation in Sabon Gari LGA, Kaduna State
It all started in December 2024 40 bright, curious, and determined young girls from Bomo, Hanwa, Muchiya, and Dogarawa communities came together for a special training on budget tracking and girls’ education advocacy. They walked in as participants… but walked out as change leaders.
The training didn’t just teach them about numbers and policies; it opened their minds to the power of their voices. They learned about adolescence, life skills, decision-making, and how to tell their stories in ways that move hearts and shift mindsets.
Fast forward to today, and these girls are on fire. They are running safe spaces across their communities, small but mighty hubs where girls come together to share ideas, talk about challenges, and support one another. Through peer-to-peer sessions, they’re spreading awareness about girls’ rights, education, and the importance of accountability in schools.
Amina’s Story: The Girl Who Turned Questions into Action
One inspiring example is Amina, a 15-year-old from Hanwa. During a peer discussion, she found out that some girls had dropped out of school because of hidden school fees, even though education is supposed to be free! Instead of staying silent, Amina took action. She started hosting community talk shows that give girls a voice to speak up about their educational rights. Today, she’s not only an advocate, she’s a role model, lighting the path for others.
Her courage inspired other girls to join her safe space sessions and demand transparency in school management. Amina’s story reflects what happens when girls are trusted, trained, and given the platform to lead-they change lives.
Building a Movement, One Conversation at a Time
These girls are proving that leadership isn’t about age or titles, it’s about courage, compassion, and community. Through their safe spaces, the 40 girls have reached 1200 adolescent girls and young women through their safe spaces the girls are building a movement that says “Girls belong in school, and their voices matter!”
They’ve also learned to use storytelling and budget tracking to advocate for education that meets girls’ needs. From holding group discussions to engaging local leaders, these advocates are driving change from the ground up.
The spark has been lit in Sabon Gari LGA in Kaduna state, and with every conversation, every story shared, and every girl empowered, the flame of change burns brighter.
With continuous support and mentorship, these young advocates will keep amplifying their impact, ensuring that girls’ education and accountability remain at the heart of community and policy conversations. The future is female and it’s fearless!
