Dear Friends of the Gulu Uganda Karin Medical Clinics,

This September, the 2020 Little by Little Campaign, a five-day crowdfunding campaign is running. It is designed to help all GlobalGiving partners around the world cultivate a robust network of small-dollar donors. All eligible donations up to $50 per unique donor per organization will be matched at 50% during the campaign, and funds will not run out!

We wanted to take just a moment to add a special "plea" for support of the clinics over and above your usual gracious and much appreciated gifts. We urgently need your support as the impact of COVID-19 as affected us significantly. Travel is extremely limited. Our clinic staff are thereby unable to do their normal "outreaches" in the community, whereby they take a pickup truck loaded with tents and medical supplies to villagers too far from the clinics for clients/patients to walk.

People in surrounding, nearby villages are often afraid to come in for fear of contracting COVID19. Our staff is now going out to them to inform them of safety protocols, and teach them how to deal with sanitization in their villages and take care of the children and pregnant mothers there, instead of at the clinic.

As a result of the pandemic, the clinics supply of medicine is nearly gone, and we can hardly afford to pay our staff – some of whom have been furloughed to reduce payroll.

Protect Mothers & Babies from HIV during the CV19

Like the rest of the world, KCIU services and project activities have been distracted by the directives in responses against the COVID 19 pandemic. As frontline “essential” health service providers we continue to offer emergency obstetric and newborn care at our facilities, where we have witnessed immediate disempowerment in the maternal newborn care due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

So many mothers have lost their lives due to the restrictions on movement and the frustration that comes with seeking permission to go see a health provider or deliver babies. Many mothers have now resorted to doing home deliveries, delivering with traditional birth attendants or small drug shops casting them into a great risk of death and paying absurd amounts of money for very poor quality services.

Achayo and Anena had their babies on the same day. Achayo explains to the clinical officer, Morris how excited she is to have this baby. When I was coming to the health centre, I was not sure how the delivery would end like. I am aware about COVID 19 and did not know how safe me and my baby would be, but I am happy with the care I was given. My baby is doing well"

All mothers and babies’ lives matter even in the toughest of the situations, as medical workers we ought to save lives and support bring life to earth.

We meaningfully engage the community through the Village Health Teams (CHWs) while conducting refresher training through videos on maternal newborn health and support them to apply these within their communities.

Mothers in the community receive timely health education through VHTs and because of this, they have managed to attend all the required ANC visits and also make postnatal review visits. We continue to thank partners for their support.

Providing care during the COVID 19 pandemic in the communities

Dear friends,

We are grateful for the support of our community over the past few weeks. As we continue to face the global COVID-19 pandemic, we are responding on multiple fronts including continual care for patients, implementation of infectious disease protocols and dissemination of public health information.

Following the declaration of the COVID-19 outbreak, Gulu district has set up strong disease surveillance and response systems including the district task force, security structures,community-based traveler detection and reporting system, has organized human health resource for COVID 19 management, quick communication technologieslikemTRAC, close user group phones, media/press and improved sample collection system through the Hub lab network.

There has been some general concern about coronavirus in the communities. On Wednesday, the incharge, Anttimo, took time out of the busy schedule to speak to the mothers who have brought their babies for immunisation. He demonstrated to them a hand washing exercise. and general overview of coronavirus. He asked at the beginning, who had heard of it, but many out of the people in attendance heard him and looked blankly at one another, few raised their hands.

To demonstrate how long the hand wash should go on for. He calls on a child to count upto 20. The child excitedly counts up to 20 as he demonstrates washing his hands. He then calls on one of the women to demonstrate the same. Although most people are still not sure about this disease. The world needs to send out more messages about the COVID - 19.

Uganda has confirmed 44 cases of COVID-19. With an already fragile healthcare systems any advancement of the pandemic in the community is likely to be devastation. There is already a lack of access to life-saving equipment, and the strain on this system is only set to increase. Our work fortifies these systems by remaining open, providing quality, affordable healthcare and employing skilled medical professionals in the communities that we serve. While many other NGOs are forced to close as ex-pats are recalled, our local staff remains.

We are thankful for your continued support to show the people of this community that we are with them, even in this time of separation. This is a global challenge unlike any we’ve faced. However, we are confident in our model of empowering local healthcare providers and creating more awareness..
