WAF-Kenya has been working to break the cycle of poverty in Kenya by equipping women in low-income and rural communities in Kenya to access and build sustainable livelihoods. We integrate care solutions ( childcare, time-saving assets ) with high-demand Climate Smart Agriculture and business skills, and access to capital to equip women in rural and low-income communities in Kenya to gain not just a skill, but the time she needs to use it, ensuring lasting prosperity for herself and her family.
On average, a Woman in Rural Kenya spends 7 hours every day ( 49 hours a week ) on essential unpaid domestic chores(childcare and fetching water), preventing her from building a steady income. This simple constraint of time means that they face challenges in completing their education, training, entering the market, and building their businesses or careers. This is made worse by climate change. Although efforts in training, access to finance exist, to end poverty, we must address time.
WAF-Kenya addresses the unpaid care and domestic work burden through community-based childcare, alongside skills and access to capital. We establish community childcare sites, including time-saving starter kits(cookstove & water. We provide training in Climate Smart Agriculture and market-driven Vocational Skills. We establish linkages to markets and form Group Savings Clubs, and provide long-term mentorship. The women are also trained as leaders to advocate for their rights.
The project will help 300 women increase their household income and secure resilient livelihoods, and contribute to the well-being of their families. The project will shift household norms and increase women's voice in decision-making. Improved food security as a result of Wider adoption of smart agriculture practices will result, ensuring food security . As a result, Children can go to school, families can afford healthcare and better nutrition, & we can break the cycle of poverty in communities.
