WHO WE ARE

CSC is a healthcare organization that provides affordable surgical care by skilled specialists. CSC started as a small project to help victims of landmine injuries, many of whom were children. Since then, it has grown into what it is today - a tertiary teaching hospital with over 75 Cambodian staff, and 93,065 and counting surgeries since 1998.  We offer free or low-cost surgical care and rehabilitation in numerous specialties for economically disadvantaged patients. We also focus on building capacity by providing sub-specialty surgical training and international training to medical professionals. Integral to our mission is a program of training local surgeons and hospital staff by international experts – focusing on the development of sustainable rehabilitative surgical services.

We are guided by the needs of our patients and strive to help them achieve health and meaningful change in their lives.

THE ASK

Whatever you can give, please know we are grateful to receive it! Little acts of kindness can collectively make a big difference.  Thank you for your continued support and for helping us live our mission.

Cambodian Boy Fights Scoliosis with  Unbreakable Spirit

Vath is a 7th-grader and only child who lives with his mother and grandparents. His mother makes a meager living by selling groceries from their home in a rural province.

Vath was born with  double “S” scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine. As a result, he has an abnormally large hump on his back, and his rib cage presses against his lungs, making breathing difficult. It is difficult for him to walk or keep up in school with his friends, and his scoliosis has inhibited his growth. When Vath’s mother heard about Children’s Surgical Centre, they traveled to Phnom Penh, where he underwent a fusion procedure of his spine. Surgeons hope to improve the curves in his spine, which will lessen his pain and improve his breathing. Before discharge, Vath and his mom spent time with the physiotherapy team to understand how to gradually increase the frequency and length of time sitting, standing and walking, and to decrease the amount of time lying and resting, as his pain allows. Vath hopes he will no longer feel so self-conscious about his body as he grows, and children will not make fun of his back.  The CSC doctors look forward to seeing him again in a few months to assess his recovery.
