Meet Kakada, a seventh grader in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and wants to be a teacher when he grows up. Since Kakada was young, he's had chronic infections and often has difficulty breathing, talking, and swallowing. Kakada's father is a motorcycle taxi driver and his mom works in a local factory. They have been spending more than their income allows to get medicine for Kakada, but it hasn't helped his condition. Fortunately, his family found Children’s Surgical Centre
To arrange his surgery.
Kakada shared with us that his younger sister is in elementary school and he likes helping her with her homework. He also loves to play soccer with his friends after school. We can't wait for Kakada to do more of what he loves once he is feeling better!
CHALLENGES
As the new year began, CSC has the unwanted task and monumental task of finding a new home to continue our mission of rehabilitative surgery for the underprivileged and teaching our Khmer staff to ensure the efforts are sustained. Activity in 2019 was similar to 2018, with just under 4,000 operations and 33,000 consultations.
When the COVID 19 pandemic hit Cambodia, and CSC was forced to curtail operations, furlough staff, and re-think how to manage in a world with COVID 19. Donations have fallen about 30% with many large donors ceasing support.
Our mission is to directly connect people through technology to access life-changing surgery. We are guided by the needs of our patients and strive to help them achieve health and meaningful change in their lives. CSC aims to improve the quality of life for disabled poor people by providing rehabilitation surgery.
For Sophat, a grandmother of seven from Cambodia, that means providing cataract surgery to regain her eyesight. Restoring Sophat’s vision will allow her to enjoy time with her grandchildren and can enjoy walks in her local public garden every evening.
