YOFAFO is an independent, Ugandan NGO based in the town of Lugazi. Our projects include a school in the village of Kitoola, where 450 students are enrolled - many of them orphans. Our dream is to see a child from this village go to university. But we urgently need to build an extra classroom block to accommodate a number of children who want to learn, but who we don't have the space for. The project will include a preschool and P7 classroom, and an office for teachers
In Uganda, only 52% of students who start primary school actually finish. Lack of education means most children end up being exploited for cheap labour. Currently, the director of YOFAFO is the only person from his village of Kitoola, to graduate from university. He is determined to change this fact. Thanks to YOFAFO and the volunteers who helped build a primary school at Kitoola, 450 children now have that chance. But YOFAFO has run out of room and urgently needs two more classrooms.
Classrooms are an essential part of learning - they are a place for children to feel safe, to be creative, to create and use interactive learning tools, and to store books and other supplies. Building a classroom for Primary 7 will ensure students have the option of staying in school. The second classroom will be for the preschoolers, as their current classroom is not protected from the weather. The office will give the teachers space to plan lessons and hold meetings.
This school already provides children and their community with a sense of hope and something they can be proud of. We instill in children a sense a confidence about their future, a sense of self-belief, the right to dream, and a love of learning. These classrooms will ensure hundreds of children have the opportunity to break out of a cycle of poverty, and grow into innovative young people who can contribute to a brighter Uganda
