Water for South Sudan is pleased to report that the well sponsored by GlobalGiving was drilled this season. This is the third well sponsored by GlobalGiving and yours was our 328th. WFSS Founder Salva Dut, our Board of Directors, and our staff are all grateful to GlobalGiving and to everyone who contributed to this project.

Your well was installed in the village of Lil-Miir in Arek-Rek, Aweil East, South Sudan. The village chief is Nhom-Chot Lueth Duomo. The GPS coordinates are 8.73496427.450667. Farming and livestock are the main sources of livlihood for people in this region. The primary crops are: maize, sorghum, groundnuts, and sesame. There is very little infrastructure and few roads in the area. There are still many villages in Aweil East without access to fresh water and open defacation is the norm. 

WFSS also provided hygiene training in the village. Hygiene education is now being offered in every village where we work. Our model is "train the trainer." In each village eight representatives, four men and for women, are chosen to be trained. They help the WFSS team to identify the issues in the village and the training addresses those specific issues. The village representatives go out to train others in their community. When people practice good hygiene it impacts sustainability of the well. 

The WFSS team in South Sudan is busy wrapping up the 2018 drilling season before the rainy season ensues. The drilling team has installed 36 new wells, bringing our total wells to 340. The rehab team has revisited 19 older wells,  rebuilding the cement platforms around the wells. Each village where WFSS worked this season has received hygiene training.

Water for South Sudan Founder Salva Dut, our managers and drilling team in South Sudan, and our Board of Directors and administrative staff in the US all want to thank you for contributing to this project. We are grateful for each contribution that helped us to reach our goal. 

Our team in South Sudan has been hard at work preparing to begin the 2018 drilling season next month. Peter Schaller, Chief of Logistics for the World Food Programme has declared South Sudan to be the most complex country in the world. "You need about 10 contingency plans for one task." WFSS has found this statement to be accurate. There are many things that we cannot control and we have to adjust our plans to accommodate unexpected logistics issues. For example, shipments of supplies not arriving on schedule.

WFSS (volunteer) Director of Operations is in the United States, which adds to the complexity of working in South Sudan. However, the Executive Director and Director of Operations have been working towards moving more of the operations management and decision making to our managers in South Sudan. To this end, the South Sudan Leadership Council, comprised of our managers in South Sudan, was recently created. The Leadership Council and WFSS Executive Director and Director of Operations have a weekly skype call. This is proving to be effective. 

Our founder and managers are all former "Lost Boys" of the Sudan. Local leadership offers WFSS a great benefit in working in South Sudan. Our team knows the people, the customs, and the language. They are easily able to navigate the country. When they go into a village to drill a well they are trusted because they are South Sudanese and because they have already communicated with county and community leaders. An integral piece of the WFSS process is to engage the community and work with them rather than come in with a top down approach.   

The well funded through this project will be drilled during the 2018 season. At the end of the season we will post another report with information about the village where the well is located and pictures. Water for South Sudan (WFSS) conducted an extensive evaluation of its wells in 2015. A board member traveled from Rochester, New York to the WFSS Compound in Wau, South Sudan. From Wau, the volunteer and WFSS’s Country Director journeyed back to visit some of WFSS’s earliest drilled wells. They thought that they would be able to evaluate 20 wells. They were actually able to assess 80 wells, a statistically significant sample of 35 percent of WFSS’s total wells.

Overall, the evaluation had positive results. The wells were operating and the water was safe. Many of the wells had broken down, but were quickly repaired. A hallmark of WFSS’s process is training villagers in making minor repairs and providing resources for parts and labor. However, there was one consistent issue – the platforms around the wells were cracked or broken at most of the wells visited.

The WFSS evaluation team watched the drilling team as they worked, learning that there were several factors accounting for the cement platforms being weak. Firstly, the ratio of materials used in the concrete mix was not correct. The drilling team was using one part cement to six parts sand. The correct ratio is one part cement to two parts sand. Secondly, the concrete was being mixed by hand on the ground and then shoveled into a wheelbarrow and moved to where it was needed. Mixing on the ground made for concrete that was not thoroughly mixed. In addition, dirt and other debris on the ground would get into the concrete and sand in the corners of the wheelbarrow would get into the concrete as it was poured. Thirdly, the concrete was poured directly onto the bricks, which are extremely hot and dry because the temperatures average about 120°F. This caused the concrete to dry almost as quickly as it was poured. The slower the concrete dries the stronger it becomes.

The US Operations team, upon learning of these errors being made instituted changes in the concrete mixing process and trained the team in South Sudan. Now the correct ratio of one part cement to two parts sand is used. WFSS purchased a mixer and all concrete is being mixed in the mixer, creating a smoother consistency concrete. Finally, the brick were eliminated and the entire platform is now poured concrete. The poured concrete is covered with wet cloths, which are kept damp for 24 hours, significantly slowing the drying process and making the concrete stronger.   

Another factor contributing to the broken platforms, and to dirty surface water staying close to the well platforms, was animals (cattle and goats) stepping on the platforms to drink water from the platforms. The WFSS operations team addressed this issue by lengthening the drainage channels, drawing animals farther away from the platform to a drinking pool 50 feet from the well, thereby keeping contamination from the well. They spent months researching options and restructuring the platforms and drainage channels. The initial plan was to substitute a length of piping between the well platform and the drinking trough.

In 2016, the drilling team in South Sudan installed the first new wells using the new platform design. The team in South Sudan sent photos of these first few wells over to the US. WFSS’s volunteer operations team in the US could see from the photos that the new design was flawed and would not be viable. It turned out that the pipes were getting clogged with dirt because the pipes were narrow; there was not enough water flowing through to wash away the dirt. The use of the new design was halted and the US Operations team went back to the drawing board. Subsequently, an improved drainage channel was created and tested.

The fix for the well design was to have a larger open, reinforced concrete channel from the well platform to the drinking pool. Now, people at the well can see if dirt or mud has fallen into the channel and they can clean it out and wash it away with water. The concrete was reinforced by putting wire mesh into the concrete in the channel. This way, if over time there are cracks in the concrete the wire mesh will hold the concrete pieces together and the cracks will be filled and sealed naturally with mud. This is similar to the process used in sidewalks and driveways in the US. There is now also a concrete or gravel apron one yard in diameter around the well platform to control soil erosion around the well platform.

WFSS requires villagers to then build some kind of fence to prevent animals from stepping onto the well platform or into the channel. We leave this to each village to use the materials they have available for fencing, realizing it would not be feasible to purchase wire or chain link in the US and ship it to South Sudan. Also, villagers are already in the habit of creating barriers to keep cattle and goats out of their homes and each village has different materials.

During the 2017 drilling season WFSS launched a new rehabilitation team. This team went back to some of the wells evaluated in 2015 to rebuild the platforms using the new design. The rehab team was able to upgrade 31 wells. In addition, the drilling team installed 22 new wells using the new well design, which has become the new standard for WFSS wells.

Through this failure, WFSS learned a number of important things:

  1. The WFSS administration and operations staff and volunteers in the US cannot make the assumption that information and direction being provided to our staff in South Sudan is being understood in the way intended. There are cultural differences and language barriers that must be recognized. Our South Sudanese team thought that they were mixing the concrete correctly because this is how others in their country do it and this is what they had learned. In fact, as other organizations drilling wells in South Sudan have watched our team implement the new protocol for mixing concrete and the new design they have received many compliments. WFSS is committed to providing the best quality wells possible and to the sustainability of the aquifers where water is accessed.   
  2.  It is critical that we find appropriate training, both technical and management, for our teams in South Sudan. The Managers in South Sudan were former “Lost Boys” who came to the US as refugees. They took advantage of the educational opportunities in the US and have returned to South Sudan to help rebuild their homeland. We need to help them to improve their managerial skills so that more of the operations decisions can be made by them in the field. WFSS’s seasonal drilling, rehab, and hygiene teams are hired locally. They often have little or no education and no expertise with technology. Providing technical training for staff will make our teams stronger, as well as helping to elevate the skilled workforce in South Sudan.
  3.  WFSS must continue to periodically send staff and volunteers from the US over to South Sudan to observe firsthand the work and the wells. The evaluation trip in 2015, helped the WFSS Board and Administration get information about the cement platforms being cracked and broken and that mixing the concrete was being done incorrectly. Another outcome of this trip was the establishment of the Evaluation and Monitoring Committee of the Board of Directors. Monitoring and Evaluation will be implemented by the management team in South Sudan. WFSS Board and Administration need to periodically visit South Sudan to observe operations. In the meantime, our rehab team will be visiting early wells each season to update all of the previously installed platforms.

Water for South Sudan’s overall objective is to provide the people we serve with a sustainable source of fresh, clean water. Installing wells is our method. This failure and what we learned from it has enabled WFSS to ensure that our method remains sustainable.

The Water for South Sudan team has been hard at work preparing for the 2018 drilling season almost since the 2017 season ended in May. The WFSS Country Director and Assistant Country Director both traveled to the US in June where they participated in operations meetings, fundraising events, and WFSS's Annual Meeting. They returned to South Sudan ready to prep for 2018. Their primary objectives for 2018 are to drill up to 40 new wells and to rehabilitate 40 to 50 of our older wells.

Following are some of the other things our team is focused on:

  • The Leadership Council, comprised of the management team in South Sudan, is working to grow the work and impact of WFSS.
  • A new Sanitation Manager has been hired and is currently researching a pilot sanitation project for WFSS.
  • WFSS managers are receiving training in hygiene and sanitation to further hone their skills in these areas.
  • WFSS Country and Assistant Country Directors are both networking and interfacing with other NGO's in Wau, as well as with the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) clusters in Wau and Juba. As a result, WFSS was asked to assist with emergency hygiene for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Wau.
  • WFSS successfully completed a capital campaign June 30th, raising more than $2.1 million. Several trucks have already been purchased and a new drilling rig is being sourced. 

WFSS Founder and Senior Advisor, Salva Dut, was recognized as a Hearts on Fire Visionary (link to article below.) Salva will be returning to Rochester, NY this October to help with fundraising. He will be participating in Water Works! A brunch to celebrate peace and development in South Sudan on October 8th (link to RSVP below.) On October 11th Salva and Linda Sue Park, author of A Long Walk to Water will present to middle school students at Monroe Community College (MCC), this event will also be live streamed (link to register below.) And finally, on October 15th Salva will be participating in the 10th Annual Walk for Water hosted by the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project at MCC

Water for South Sudan had a great 2017 drilling season, impacting 54 rural South Sudanese villages:

  • 21 new wells were drilled in villages having no access to safe water, bringing the total number of wells drilled since 2003 to 304.
  • 33 of the earliest wells drilled by WFSS had the platforms around the wells upgraded to a new, stronger and more sustainable design developed by WFSS in 2016.  
  • All 54 villages received hygiene education to train villagers in keeping the water in the wells clean and to educate them about disease prevention. 

Yar is just one of the many people our team met in the field this season. Yar lives in Boul, a village in Alabek County Tonj State, where WFSS installed a borehole well in 2007 and returned this season to rehab that well. Yar was asked how life has changed for the village in the ten years since the well was drilled. Yar enthusiastically replied that life has improved for everyone. Most notably, since the installation of the borehole the rate of water-borne diseases, such as diarrhea, Bilharzia, Typhoid, and Guinea Worm, has dropped significantly.

Yar also shared with the WFSS team that before the well was drilled only four people went to school. Currently there are 26 students, including nine girls. In addition, with plenty of clean water for them there are more domestic animals, such as cows. This provides milk for families providing nutrition that further enhances their health. 

Yar was appreciative of the hygiene training provided and is happy that they know how to protect the water source, making it sustainable for a long future.
