Supporting Girls at risk of FGM and Child Marriage

During the past quarter, we supported referrals for girls in need of care and support who have been affected by violence. We extended psychosocial support for 20 girls offering them the assistance they need. We arranged for hospital visits to ensure they received the necessary medical care, provided food & non-food essentials, and provided transportation to seek legal support, helped them report incidents at the police station, and attended court proceedings to ensure the girls access the justice they deserve. A lesson we have learned is to provide survivor-centered care without compromising the quality of our work.

We also carried out an economic development training for 50 mothers of girls from Masaba ward, the training was on managing a business: women’s roles in savings and loan programs, time management, task sharing, decision-making, and business skills. We also trained the women on the importance of staying healthy: reproductive health, sexuality, and making healthy decisions. Laws protecting women’s rights: understanding and preventing violence, perceptions, and implications of the laws.

As a result of the training, we have seen women contributing to their families’ food security and also increased girls’ status in the household by accessing formal education and their ability to make decisions.

The training has led to strengthened social-support systems for girls & women to address violence against women & girls, acknowledging the critical role that women play in ending some of the harmful cultural practices in the community.

We are so grateful to GlobalGiving for giving us a platform to support Vulnerable Girls from Migori County.
