Supporting girls at risk of FGM in Kuria Community

By Magdaline Majuma | Project Lead

Girls/parents sessions

In the past quarter, the project has been able to support girl’s education in different ways.

During the holidays we carried out a girl's review meeting/focus group discussion to understand the gaps the girls have and how we can support them; some of the feedback that we got included a lack of basic essentials such as toiletries, books, sanitary towels etc.

We worked closely with the girl's council to ensure that we could support the needy girls so that they could go back to school with the necessary basic essentials.

We provided the basic essentials to more than 50 girls when they got back to school in August.

Apart from supporting girls with the necessary basic essentials we have supported girls as role models/champions to reach out to their peers and their communities to make positive decisions to end FGM. Acknowledging that parents play a vital role in girls’ education, we carry out parent/child programs to help them provide a supportive environment at home for the girls. Our girl’s advocates carried out visits to the girls' families during the holidays to sensitize the parents to the importance of girls' education. The girls’ advocates were able to work harmoniously with the girls and their families to increase awareness of girl’s education, change negative attitudes toward education, and deal more effectively with problems related to female genital mutilation (FGM).

Thanks and gratitude to GlobalGiving for your support and commitment to supporting girls at risk of FGM in Kuria-Kenya
