Project Report | Aug 21, 2017
Brick by brick

Sarala, our new PM with the kids!
Sarala, our new PM with the kids!

While we await the outcome of our license application, for which we finished our part of the process last month, here’s an update on everything happening in our organisation right now. (Please see our last project report for more info on the license application).

.....

Sports Day: 4 of our children won prizes in their school's annual sports day, which took place amid lots of music and celebration. Honestly, you haven't attended a proper sports day until you've been to one in India! We saw marching bands, inspirational flags, a giant flashmob, choreographed dance routines with moral messages such as 'Recycle' or 'Save Water' and some pretty nail biting races. Anjali, Mahalakshmi, Siva and Ammu all won prizes in their events – each competing against 300+ people in their year group!

India's 70th Independence: was celebrated last week across India. The children were rewarded with a 4 day holiday and all children got to see their families. Satish was picked from his year group to play the famous Gandhi in his schools Independence play – he got the full costume complete with glasses, dhoti and stick!

New staff: We're extremely pleased to formally welcome on board two long term volunteers, Sarala and Leciya, as Project Managers. They will be responsible for our Education and Community Development Projects respectively. Both are young women who received support from our partners CARE Foundation to complete their higher education. They were born into remote, rural villages where poverty is high and girls going to university rare. However, between them they have 2 undergraduate degrees, 3 masters and an MPhil!

Marathon: Visitors from abroad will be coming to India in September to visit our projects and some will be running the marathon to raise money for our causes. Sarala (our new PM) has also taken on the challenge of running the half marathon! She's never run more than 5km and training only started last week! We wish her luck.

Team in India: two MNIK team members are currently based in India working with our partners CARE Foundation to develop projects and the organisation. Over the last 2 months they've been working with CARE to measure the impact of current projects and map our plans for future projects, particularly in the area of community development.

Thanks as always for your support!
