From Foundations to Framework: Project Progress Update

By Thusitha Simon | Chief Operating Officer

Project Update
Project: Build a Global Language Centre in Rural Sri Lanka
Reporting Period: April to June 2026

We are pleased to share that the Global Language Centre project has made encouraging progress during this reporting period, moving steadily from groundwork and foundation preparation into visible structural construction.

Following the initial site preparation and foundation work completed earlier, the main building structure has now begun to take shape. The progress achieved is a meaningful milestone, especially given the challenging elevated terrain and the need for careful, phased construction.

Progress to Date

During this reporting period, the following works have been advanced:

  • Completion of key foundation and ground-level structural works
  • Casting of concrete columns and beams for the main building structure
  • Development of the ground floor structural frame
  • Construction of the first-floor slab in sections
  • Installation of reinforcement steel for further vertical construction
  • Commencement of upper-level column work
  • Construction of the staircase structure
  • Continued formwork, shuttering, and support works required for concrete casting
  • Ongoing site organisation, material handling, and preparation for the next phase

The images show clear progress from an early foundation stage to a defined building frame, with the ground floor structure now visible and upper-level works underway. The reinforced concrete columns, beams, slab areas, and staircase indicate that the first major building phase is progressing well.

The surrounding site remains active, with construction materials, support frames, reinforcement bars, and formwork in place. Work continues to be carefully managed in phases, taking into account both the technical requirements of the site and the availability of funds.

Use of Funds

Funds raised and received during this phase have supported:

  • Reinforced concrete works for columns, beams, and slab sections
  • Steel reinforcement and structural materials
  • Timber and formwork required for casting
  • Skilled labour and technical supervision
  • Site preparation, logistics, and material transport
  • Continued safety and stabilisation measures on the construction site

Each contribution has helped move the project beyond groundwork and into the physical creation of the learning centre.

Current Status

The Global Language Centre is now visibly emerging as a permanent learning space. While there is still significant work ahead, the transition from foundation works to the structural frame marks an important step forward.

The building is not yet complete, and further funding will be required to continue the next stages, including additional concrete works, roofing, walls, flooring, finishing, services, and interior preparation.

Next Steps

In the coming phase, we aim to:

  • Continue upper-level column and beam construction
  • Complete remaining slab and structural works
  • Progress towards roofing and enclosure of the building
  • Begin walling and internal space definition once the structure is secured
  • Continue development in line with technical guidance and funding availability

With Gratitude

We are deeply grateful to all who have supported this project and helped bring it to this important stage.

What began as a vision is now rising from the ground, becoming a visible space of learning, reflection, and opportunity. With continued support, the Global Language Centre will grow into a sanctuary of knowledge and understanding for children, youth, and the wider rural community.

Together, we are building more than a centre. We are building access, hope, wisdom, and a future shaped through learning.
